Abby Broyles ended her campaign after she allegedly verbally insulted a group of middle school girls at a sleepover. According to reports, Abby Broyles was drunk at the time. The Democratic candidate released a statement about her withdrawal.
She said that her decision to end her Oklahoma’s 5th Congressional District campaign was because of gerrymandering and “salacious right-wing clickbait,” along with the recent events of the sleepover.
A press release from her team said, “Shortly after Abby announced her candidacy for CD-5, the Republican legislature egregiously gerrymandered the new district to prevent any democrat from winning. That reality combined with recent events that turned Abby into salacious right-wing clickbait have led the Broyles campaign to make this difficult decision and Abby to focus on her mental health.”
Broyles said that she regretted her actions at the sleepover.
“Last month, I made a mistake I deeply regret,” Broyles said. “As I admitted, I mixed alcohol and a medication I’d never taken before while under the same roof as a group of young women who looked up to me, and for that, I apologize from the bottom of my heart.”
Abby Broyles added in a Twitter thread that the statements of criticism, made by Sarah Matthews, one of the girl’s mothers, were “falsely accusatory.” She said, “The things I’m accused of saying are not who I am, nor do they depict the entirety of the situation that occurred. They are not a reflection of my beliefs. This has been a painful attack on my character from the accusations themselves to the overwhelming amount of politically-charged threats, malicious emails, calls and messages I’ve received.”
According to reports, Sarah Matthews was not at the sleepover when the alleged verbal assault happened. Another parent was present and confirmed the accusations against Broyles. The Oklahoma Democrat is being criticized online for her actions.
The sleepover happened on Feb. 11 at a home of a Deer Creek Public Schools student. Abby Broyles allegedly yelled at the girls and became increasingly drunk throughout the night. She allegedly called three of the girls an “acne fucker,” a “Hispanic fucker,” and a “judgy fucker.”
The U.S. House Candidate also allegedly threw up in a laundry basket and one of the girl’s shoes.
“It’s so sad, because this is someone who has stood on a soap box and talked about empowering women, and rather than do that with these girls she chose to belittle and denigrate the next generation of women,” Matthews said. “And she does this at a time when their bodies are changing, and their features are changing, and they are vulnerable.”
Abby Broyles has denied all allegations of her drunken tirade. She said that the social media backlash prompted her to try to end her life. She released a statement and promised her supporters that she’ll be back. “Once I work through my mental health challenges, I will be back to fight and protect our democracy, working alongside all of you – women, girls, and working families alike. I’m making this promise to you: I will be back stronger than ever,” Abby Broyles said.
Since she ended her campaign, many of Abby Broyles’ supporters have praised the Oklahoma Democrat for taking the time for her mental health after the criticism she received.
Oklahoma Democratic Party chair Alicia Andrews said, “I’m glad that Miss Broyles is taking the time to take care of herself and put herself first.” According to Andrews, the Oklahoma Democratic Party is still focusing on taking the 5th Congressional seat away from the current sitting Republican, Stephanie Bice.
