Allie Rae is about to lose her bread and butter. The content subscription service OnlyFans is cleaning up its act, eliminating the sexually explicit content on its platform starting October 2021. The changes have sparked backlash across the Internet as content creators wonder how they will continue to make money on the platform.
Allie Rae, a content creator on the platform, who is known for her sexually explicit content, quit her job to enter the business. She will now need to change gears after the company instates its new policies in the next couple of months.
Who Is Allie Rae?
One of OnlyFans’ biggest success stories is Allie Rae – a Navy vet turned nurse who quit her job to pursue porn on the site. The nurse garnered an impressive social media following while working at a Massachusetts hospital. She posted pictures of her scantily clad body on Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. As her popularity soared, her fans started begging her to take off the undergarments, too. They asked her to start an OnlyFans account, which would allow her to post exclusive content for a monthly fee.
Stressed on the front lines during the pandemic, Allie Rae started posting nude photographs and sexual material on the subscriber-only platform. Soon enough, she was making more money stripping for her fans than she was delivering babies in the hospital. Before long her employers caught wind of her side gig and gave her an ultimatum – quit OnlyFans or get fired. Allie made the tough choice and turned her back on her healthcare profession.
Now OnlyFans is Allie’s primary source of income. She told the NY Post that she is on track towards making $200,000 in revenue this month. She’s being smart with her money, though. She said she is using it to pay off student loans, invest in Florida real estate, and take care of her family as carefully as possible. She mentioned she’s in a whole new tax bracket and wants to stay safe when tax season rolls around.
Allie said that “it is a full-time job” and that she and her husband “work very hard.” She explained that “girls that are successful like this on OnlyFans, they are not just posting and then just going to dinner and party.” She said she often works longer hours than when she was a nurse. She wants to end the stigma surrounding sex workers.
“I am an educated woman, a wife, a mother, I’m still very loyal to my husband, I’m a very good mom,” she admitted. “I think there is a stigma out there that that’s not what you see on OnlyFans. There are a lot of us out there and I would really love to make an impact on that. It has been a really crazy ride.”
The issue for Allie is that her sex work might soon be off the table. Once OnlyFans’ new guidelines take effect, Allie will be limited in what she can post for her subscribers. This could be extremely detrimental to her income.
Why OnlyFans Is Restricting Its Creators
According to a statement made by the content subscription service, the company will prohibit its creators from posting explicit content. The change of policy will mainly affect sex workers who have moved from other pornographic websites to the subscriber-only platform. The company will still allow creators to post nude photos and videos but its new system will flag content that is sexually explicit.
The move is expected to help OnlyFans secure a round of investment at a $1 billion valuation, according to Bloomberg. Banking partners and payment providers have become wary of partnering with the company because of its pornographic content.
The company said in its statement that “in order to ensure the long-term sustainability of our platform, and continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines.” The company will focus on other creator-driven content streams, such as music, workout videos, and other non-explicit content.
The problem for OnlyFans is that many of its 130 million users are attracted to the platform for its sexually explicit content. Taking it away will not only affect creators but the company’s user base, too. The company has already created a brand for its platform. OnlyFans is known for giving sex workers a safe and more profitable avenue to post content. Without that side of the platform, subscribers may drop off.
What Will Happen To The Creators?
Just like any pornographic website, OnlyFans has its share of problems. For one, police have begun cracking down on under-aged girls posting explicit content on the site. These girls used fake identification to set up accounts, bypassing OnlyFans’ security measures. Authorities have pointed out that many of these girls are being exploited on the platform – the company insisted its age verification systems are above regulatory requirements.
With a permanent ban on sexually explicit content on the platform, OnlyFans may be protecting itself from scandals involving underaged content creators. A BBC investigation revealed that OnlyFans previously had “tolerance” for accounts posting illegal content, an accusation the company vehemently denied. In an effort to maintain its longevity as a universal platform – without pigeonholing itself into a singular category – OnlyFans is doing away with any sexually explicit content. For better or for worse.
But how will this affect the content creators already on the platform?
For many top-earners on the site, sexual content is what provides the largest subscriber base. Removing that content and prohibiting furthers posts will eliminate a large section of fans. For big names like Bella Thorne and Cardi B, this limitation won’t break the bank. For smaller creators whose sole purpose on the platform is to post sexual content, they may have to go back to their day jobs.
