The New York Post reported Tuesday that Albach’s remains were recovered on a Santa Catarina beach in south Brazil last week.
Local authorities arrested three individuals in connection with the crime. One of the suspects reportedly admitted to making the 21-year-old victim dig a ditch before fatally shooting her, and later led police to her body.
None of the three suspects have yet been named, and it remains unclear whether any of them have been formally charged, according to the Post.
Reports: Amanda Albach Dug Her Own Grave
According to Brazilian news outlet g1, one of the suspect’s arrested in connection with Albach’s death told investigators that the 21-year-old dug her own grave on Nov. 15 before she was killed by two, point-blank gunshots.
Police Chief Bruno Fernandez from the local Criminal Investigation Division told reporters that Albach had gone to Santa Catarina with friends that day to go to a birthday party.
“It was this bond that brought her [the victim] to this house in Santa Catarina,” he said. “She came to celebrate this person’s birthday.”
According to reports, Albach’s friends told investigators left the party and did not see her again. But authorities said they found “inconsistencies in the statements” of those who had attended the party.
A lawyer for her family told reporters her last known contact with loved ones came later that night.
“She sent a message to her parents, around 8.40pm, saying that she would return to Fazenda Rio Grande at dawn,” said attorney Michael Pinheiro. “Since then, there has been no more news of her. The cell phone is off and Amanda never accessed WhatsApp again.”
The Brazilian outlet reported that Albach’s family told police they “suspected that her voice was strange,” and that “there was wind in the background of the audio.” Family members went on to speculate that the 21-year-old was “already with him in this place” before a suspect fatally shot her and buried her on the beach, according to g1.
Reports: Suspect Turned Themselves In
Foreign reports indicated that a suspect turned himself in only moments after Albach was killed, and revealed a possible motive for investigators in doing so.
“The motivation will be determined with all the context,” said the police chief. “But, preliminarily, one of those investigated felt uncomfortable because he realised that Amanda had told third parties that he was involved in drug trafficking.”
“He didn’t like the situation and chose to take her life,” Fernandes added.
Investigators also said the 21-year-old took a picture of one of the suspects pointing a gun at her, and sent it to loved ones just before her death.
The suspect reportedly told police that he was the one who shot and killed Amanda Albach. The exact manner in which the other two unnamed suspects allegedly participated in her killing is unclear. It was not known as of Tuesday evening whether the three suspects whose arrest was reported by g1 were charged with Albach’s murder. One of the suspects was reportedly a friend of the victim.
According to foreign reports, Amanda Albach leaves behind a 2-year-old daughter.
