Andy Corren wrote a brutally honest and hilarious obituary for his late mother, Renay Mandel Corren, and the obit went viral. The written memorial, which was originally published in The Fayetteville Observer, has people falling in love with the late “plus sized Jewish Lady Redneck.”
Corren marked his mother’s passing and said the “redheaded matriarch of a sprawling Jewish-Mexican-Redneck American family has kicked it. Hers was a bawdy, rowdy life lived large, broke and loud.”
According to the obituary, Renay Mandel Corren spent her 84 years living in North Carolina, Florida and Texas. She was a loud and wild woman who made an impact on everyone she met. Her son wrote that she was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, where she developed her love for ham and atheism. She moved to Fayetteville, N.C. after marrying her Army husband and when the marriage ended, she moved to Florida, and then El. Paso, TX to live with her son.
In the 1,000-word obituary, Corren wrote that his mother loved bowling, cribbage, and reading dirty magazines (for the articles, of course). Renay Mandel Corren was 100% Jewish, while not always practicing, and her son said he got in the habit of bringing her Jewish deli meats when he visited.
“She was a Jew, and she was a proud Jew,” Corren told the Jewish Week. “It was a humongous part of her self-image and her projected one, which is that she was a Jewish girl through and through, from McKeesport [Pennsylvania, where she was born] and until the day she died in El Paso.”
The mother of six apparently had an affair with Larry King in the 1960s, went into debt more times than she could count and was known for cheating death throughout her life. Covid-19, breast cancer (twice), blood clots, and pneumonia (twice) didn’t stop the “plus-sized Jewish lady redneck,” from living her life.
Corren’s son has plans for a “very disrespectful and totally non-denominational,” memorial to honor his mother on May 10, 2022. He says that the plan is to have it in a bowling alley in Fayetteville, and that everyone is welcome. He added that the family wants no privacy for their grieving. Since the obituary went viral, many people have said they plan to attend.
To end the obit, Andy Corren wrote a beautiful send-off to his late mother and mentioned all the people that would miss her.
He said, “She left me nothing but these lousy memories. Which I, and my family of 5 brothers and my sister-in-laws, nephews, friends, nieces, neighbors, ex-boyfriends, Larry King’s children, who I guess I might be one of, the total strangers who all, to a person, loved and will cherish her. Forever. Please think of the brightly frocked, frivolous, funny and smart Jewish redhead who is about to grift you, tell you a filthy joke, and for Larry King’s sake: LAUGH. Bye, Mommy. We loved you to bits.”
Since going viral, many people have taken to social media and expressed how much they love the obituary and miss Renay Mandel Corren, even though they’ve never met her.
One person wrote on Twitter and said, “OMG, this is a masterpiece. Shows it’s possible to make someone laugh, cry and miss someone they never met, using the creative application of words and sass. I love it. RIP Renay Mandel Corren, and thoughts and sympathies to all her family and friends.”
Others have said that the obit inspired them to live amazing and full lives just like Renay did. Many people want Andy to write their own obituaries when the time comes. In an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Andy Corren said he never expected his mother’s obituary to go viral, but he added that it is a fitting ending to her amazing, funny life.
