Antonia Ashford admitted in a post-arrest interview that she did shoot her husband, Roderick Ashford, on Monday. Antonia Ashford was the associate warden at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, the same federal jail where singer R. Kelly and Jeffrey Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell are being held. Ashford was arrested and charged on Monday.

The 44-year-old associate warden lived in New Jersey with her son and her husband prior to the fatal shooting. Antonia Ashford was charged earlier this week with murder and unlawful possession of a weapon after police discovered 47-year-old Roderick Ashford dead in the home. A post-arrest interview revealed to Law&Crime that the couple’s adult son was upstairs playing video games when the shooting occurred.

Antonia Ashford shot and killed her husband Monday during an argument, according to police. She was the associate warden for at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, the same federal jail holding R. Kelly and Ghislaine Maxwell.

The son described gunplay in the Jackson Township home as “typical” and claimed it was not the first time his parents pulled out a gun during an argument. Ashford’s son told authorities that “his mother and father often have arguments and at times either one could be the aggressor.” A detective wrote during the interview that the son “advised that it was typical that during their fights that Antonia and Roderick would point firearms at each other.”

According to the report, Antonia Ashford’s son “walked past his parents as they were arguing and observed [his mother] holding a firearm. But he did notice that his father was unharmed at the time. He was upstairs playing videos games when he heard a gunshot, according to the detective.”

Authorities reported that at 2:15 a.m. Monday officers responded to a 911 call made by the couple’s son. During the call, the son explained that “there was a shooting at the home and the father was dead.” When police arrived on the scene, they identified the mother as the shooter. Officers found Roderick Ashford dead with a gunshot wound to the face.

At around 5:33 a.m. detectives read Antonia Ashford her rights. During that time, investigators conducted a taped interview. In the interview, detectives say “Ashford advised that she and Roderick were arguing throughout the early evening hours and the two got into a physical altercation. Antonia eventually locked herself in the downstairs bathroom with her purse which contained the handgun.”

Ashford told authorities that she stayed in the bathroom for about 30 minutes while her husband repeatedly called her cellphone. While in the bathroom, Antonia Ashford said she heard Roderick tell her son that he sustained injuries to the face. The argument allegedly continued after she left the bathroom.

At one point she pointed the gun at Roderick Ashford and shot him in the face. Detectives explained that the suspect “acknowledged that moments prior to firing her weapon she knew the victim was unarmed.”

Detectives reported that “throughout the interview Antonia advised that something was different today, specifically stating ‘it was either him or me’ while also stating multiple times that she did not mean to pull the trigger.”

Antonia Ashford was transported to the Ocean County Jail, according to a news release. Her bail has not been set. She is being held at the Ocean County Jail pending her detention hearing scheduled for Friday.

In a statement from the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, officials reminded the press that “the charges referenced above are merely accusations and the press and public are reminded that all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.”

According to reports, both Antonia Ashford and her husband, Roderick, worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Roderick Ashford worked as a drug treatment specialist at the Federal Correction Institution, Fort Dix in New Jersey. It was pointed out that Antonia worked as associate warden for the same New York federal jail holding Ghislaine Maxwell, who is an accused sex trafficker.
