When Bailey Kenworthy, a 24-year-old Texan in New York City, was proposed to by her boyfriend, she could hardly contain her excitement.

New York, for its part, didn’t care.

In a TikTok post that has since gone viral, Kenworthy shouted from an apartment window to share the good news.

“I’m engaged, New York!” she yelled.

Replied the city, “Shut the f—k up!”

Without missing a beat, Kenworthy quipped to the camera: “I just love it here!”

The 24-year-old, who reportedly works as a patient service specialist at the University of Texas Medical Branch’s COVID Urgent Care center, was visiting the city with her now-fiancé, 28-year-old Miguel, just after Christmas.

She told the New York Post that they were exploring Manhattan and took a detour to the outer boroughs when Miguel popped the question unexpectedly at Dumbo Pier near Brooklyn Bridge Park.

“He played it off by putting our camera on a bench and was like, ‘Let’s record ourselves posing,’” Kenworthy told the newspaper. “As we’re posing, he then did it.”

Caught by surprise, she said yes, snapping a few photos and posting them to her Instagram page to commemorate the moment.

NYC Says ‘Congrats’

The happy couple left the pier behind and made their way back into the city to a friend’s apartment. Kenworthy was still glowing with excitement. She opened the apartment window to share the good news with the Big Apple.

In a moment that’s now immortalized in a TikTok post that’s garnered hundreds of thousands of views and more than a quarter million likes, Kenworthy’s elation was met with some of that world famous east coast hospitality.

“The nicest city,” she wryly captioned the video.

Commenters were amused, but surprised in the least.

“New York always finds a way to humble someone quickly,” quipped one user.

“New York keeps it real,” wrote another.

Others laughingly said that the crude retort was just the city’s way of saying mazel tov.

“That means we [are] happy for you girl,” joked one commenter. “That’s just how us New Yorkers show love.”

“That translates to ‘congrats sis,’” said the official TikTok account of the language learning app Duolingo — referring to the city’s notorious penchant for telling it like it is.

Others still noticed the similarities to an iconic scene from the beloved NBC sitcom Friends, in which Monica shares the news of her engagement from her apartment balcony.

“[It’s] giving me Monica shouting on the balcony vibes,” wrote one user.

“Very Monica Geller of you,” quipped another.

For her part, Kenworthy said the quintessentially New York response was the ideal end to a perfect trip.

“Thank all of you!” she replied in the comments section. “I am so grateful and not offended by the NYC language! I don’t expect the busy to care!”

“I love that my video is blowing up,” she told reporters after the fact. “I enjoy when others laugh at my jokes.”

She added that, while she loves the sitcom, she thought her idea to shout the good news out the apartment window was “100 percent original.”

Friends is hilarious,” she told the Post. “I just love it here, [it] was my whole vibe the entire week we spent in NYC, no matter how non-friendly anyone acted.”

According to the newspaper, Bailey and Miguel have tentatively set a date for next year. It’s subject to change depending on the Covid-19 pandemic, but the happy couple hopes to tie the knot in November 2023.
