Ben Affleck’s divorce from Jennifer Garner has long been the fodder of tabloids. Was he drinking too much? Did he cheat? Why did they split up? In an interview on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show, the actor finally revealed his side of the story.
“That was part of why I started drinking alcohol, I was trapped,” Ben Affleck said. “I was like, ‘I can’t leave because of my kids, but I am not happy. What do I do?’ What I did was drink a bottle of scotch on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution.”
Ben said that he drank more as his marriage to Jennifer Garner deteriorated, and that his alcoholism and addiction were exacerbated by his marriage problems. The actor went to rehab in 2018, and he has been sober since then. He says he knew he needed to stop drinking when he saw the impact his addiction had on his kids. The couple has three children together, Violet, 16, Seraphina, 12, and Samuel, 9.
“You suffer enough that something inside you goes, ‘I am done,'” he explained. “I am lucky because I hit that point… when I felt as if [my addiction] impacted [my kids]. I recognized it. It was the worst day of my life,” he said. “I made amends. For a while, I thought it was temporary, ‘Maybe this feeling is going to go away.’ But since that day, I swear to Christ, I have not ever wanted to drink once,” he said.
Nevertheless, the actor said the breakup was amicable, and he bashed rumors of a nasty divorce. During that time tabloids claimed that Ben cheated with their nanny. He denied the rumors and called them “f–king horrible lies.”
The 49-year-old actor said, “The truth was, we took our time, we made a decision, we grew apart. We had a marriage that did not work. This happens. It is somebody I love and respect, but to whom I should not be married any longer. And then we said, ‘You know what? We tried. We tried, because we had kids.”
Affleck continued, “and then both of us felt like, ‘We don’t want this to be the model that our kids see of marriage.'” The actor added that he believed that if they hadn’t gotten divorced in 2015 that he would still have a drinking problem and the couple would be “at each other’s throats.”
“Did we have moments of tension? Did we have disagreements over the custody? Was stuff difficult for us? Did we get angry? Yes,” he admitted. “But fundamentally it was always underpinned with respect. I knew she was a good mom. I hope that she knew that I was a good dad. I was. I had to get sober, I knew that too and I acknowledged that. I said, ‘You’re right. I’ve got to quit drinking.'”
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have both moved on to new relationships. Ben caused quite a stir when he got back together with J.Lo. Us Weekly broke the news that Jennifer Garner reunited with ex-flame John Miller, and according to sources the pair got pretty serious. In November, engagement rumors were flying after Jen Garner was seen with a new ring on her finger, but those rumors were never confirmed.
