Benjamin David Calderon, 19, has been arrested in connection with the deadly Friday night shooting at the home of Gilroy, Calif. lawmaker Rebeca Armendariz, police have announced.

Authorities said that Calderon was taken into custody when Gilroy-Morgan Hill Regional SWAT team members executed a search warrant at Calderon’s Gilroy home late Saturday afternoon.

Calderon was reportedly booked in a Santa Clara County jail on murder charges. It was not immediately clear Monday if the 19-year-old had a lawyer, or if he had been arraigned.

Just before 1 a.m., officials said Calderon became “involved in an altercation” that ended in at least one person firing a gun.

Authorities said four partygoers were shot — all were aged 17 to 19 years old, and none have yet been publicly identified.

One young man was pronounced dead at the scene. The other three victims were hospitalized, two of them with “life-threatening” injuries, NBC reported. Councilwoman Armendariz was not injured in the gunfire.

Rebeca Armendariz Issues Statement

On Sunday, Councilwoman Armendariz issued a statement on the deadly shootout that occurred at her home.

The full text of her statement is below:

“By now you may have seen the post from Gilroy Police Department regarding the investigation of a shooting on Las Animas [Avenue], or one of many social media post speculating about the event and individuals involved. Because this remains an active investigation, I am unable to share more at this time but I would like to thank all of the members of the community who have reached out to express their concerns for their patience. I am thankful that my family and I, who live on Las Animas [Avenue], were not hurt in this tragedy, and I pray for those whose loved ones have been touched by what has occurred.”

“In the meantime, we are giving our full cooperation to the Gilroy Police Department in this investigation. Our primary concern is for the individuals impacted and their families. We hope the Gilroy community will come together with love and support for those touched by yesterday’s events at the appropriate time.”

Reports: Calderon’s and Armendariz’s Families Linked

It is not immediately clear what connections exist between Councilwoman Armendariz and the 19-year-old Calderon.

The Gilroy Dispatch reported Sunday that there were “Facebook links between members of the councilwoman’s family and a Calderon family that seemed to indicate a relationship” existed between the two, but that those “links” had “disappeared” the day after the shooting.

The Dispatch did not further characterize the “links” or the “relationship.”

On the Dispatch Facebook page, one commenter posted a screenshot of an invitation to a Halloween party at the same general time and location as the one at Armendariz’s home. The invitation instructs readers to “RSVP to Ben.”

The newspaper also reported that the phone number on the invitation “rang to a voicemail greeting for a Benjamin Calderon.”

This invitation may have been to the party at the home of Gilroy, California lawmaker Rebeca Armendiraz, where police say Benjamin David Calderon, 19, shot four people.
