Bethany Martin and her friend were arrested after they videotaped themselves stealing from a corpse on Monday. The crazy video was posted on Snapchat. It showed Martin, 17, and her 16-year-old friend stealing jewelry from a dead body that was laying in a drainage ditch.
According to police, Bethany Martin and her friend found the corpse of a 25-year-old man in a drainage ditch in Bexar County, Texas. The pair recorded the incident on Snapchat, a popular social media platform where videos are deleted after 24 hours. Police were notified of the footage and arrested the two girls on Tuesday.
When questioned by police, the younger girl explained that she wanted the man’s gold pendant necklace because she thought it matched her style. The 16-year-old, who has not been named because of her age, prompted Bethany Martin to steal it from the dead body. Martin threw the chain in the nearby grass and gave the medallion to her friend.
The pair explained to police that they were walking to a gas station when they found the dead body near the intersection of Sunday Song and Charismatic in Southwest Bexar County. Though they admitted to stealing from the corpse, Martin and her friend claimed they had nothing to do with his death.
Police were notified of the body when a third friend arrived on the scene. Bethany Martin reportedly called and told the friend what happened. When the friend arrived, they immediately called 911 and reported the dead body. Police arrived on the scene Monday but the girls were let go.
It wasn’t until authorities were notified of the Snapchat video that Bethany Martin and her friend were arrested. The video incriminated the young girls of their theft and the pair were taken into custody a day after it was posted.
Bethany Martin was arrested on Tuesday and charged with theft to a human corpse or gave. Martin’s bond was set at $2,000 and she has since been released. It isn’t clear if Martin was being held at Bexar County jail or at the local police station. Martin’s 16-year-old friend was also charged with theft of a human corpse, though it’s unclear if her bail was set or if she has been released.
In the video of the theft, which was posted to Snapchat on Monday, both Bethany Martin and her friend can be seen near the corpse. At one point, Martin bends down to take the necklace from the man, tossing the chain into nearby grass and giving the medallion to her friend. Police used the Snapchat video to charge the two girls, who confessed to the crime after their arrest Tuesday.
The 16-year-old girl gave the medallion to the police who then handed the piece to the victim’s next of kin. Police identified the 25-year-old man though his name has not been revealed by authorities. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the man killed himself after ruling out foul play. His exact cause of death has not been released to the public, though his family has been notified.
