Bette Midler has apologized for calling West Virginia “poor, illiterate and strung out.” While the actress seemed sincere, many critics are not willing to forgive so easily. They continue to slam the 76-year-old for her poor choice of words.

Just an hour after she posted a tweet criticizing Sen. Joe Manchin, the actress apologized and said, “I apologize to the good people of WVA for my last outburst. I’m just seeing red; #JoeManchin and his whole family are a criminal enterprise. Is he really the best WV has to offer its own citizens? Surely there’s someone there who has the state’s interests at heart, not his own!”

Her previous tweet attacked the senator for not supporting the Build Back Better bill, which was a sweeping plan created by President Joe Biden to help the economy and our current climate crisis. Manchin’s vote was the deciding one on whether or not the bill would pass in the Senate.

Bette said she became angry at the Democratic senator and tweeted, “What #JoeManchin, who represents a population smaller than Brooklyn, has done to the rest of America, who wants to move forward, not backward, like his state, is horrible. He sold us out. He wants us all to be just like his state, West Virginia. Poor, illiterate and strung out.”

Because of her outburst, many people criticized the actress and called her “out of touch elite.” They said that Bette knows nothing about West Virginia and that many of the state’s hardworking citizens fought to get the Build Better Back bill to pass.

One person tweeted, “I’m from WV. I’m not illiterate, poor or strung out! I’m very upset with Manchin! Many are struggling and they keep voting against their own best interest. Over 68% of WV support the BBB! If more understood what is in the BBB that number would be higher!”

Others asked Bette Midler how many West Virginians she’s met and said they were offended that the actress would resort to stereotypes when expressing her anger.

Another person tweeted and said, “I’m from WV, I’m not poor, illiterate or strung out. What I am is disgusted by this tweet and as a middle school teacher, it takes a lot to disgust me. It’s hard for me to tell my students to be better people when adults do stuff like this.”

Even with the actress’ apology tweet, fans were not quick to forgive her. Many said that her apology came too late and that she should have thought about her words before she tweeted them.

One fan wrote, “Apology not accepted. At all! That is obviously what you think of us, if it weren’t then you would have never thought to say it in the first place.”

Another fan tweeted and said that the actress was just trying to save her career with the apology tweet and was probably forced by her manager to write it.

This is not the first time that Bette Midler has been attacked for her tweets. The outspoken actress was accused of being racist after she verbally attacked Black Trump supporters and also made fun of Melania Trump’s accent, calling her an “illegal alien.” She also called the First Lady “FLOTITS.”
