Netflix announced a Bridgerton spinoff series set before the events of the original series. The prequel will focus on iconic characters from the Netflix original, shedding new light on the pasts of Queen Charlotte, Violet Bridgerton, and Lady Danbury.

The prequel series was confirmed on Friday with a statement by Netflix and Shondaland. The Bridgerton spinoff will center around “the origins of Queen Charlotte,” Golda Rosheuvel’s character in the instant Netflix hit. The story will develop her youth and love life before marrying King George III and fastening herself as the matriarch of the series.

“The Bridgerton-verse is expanding!” the statement began. The plan is to continue building on the universe, with fresh stories that take audiences past the focal point of the original series. The Queen Charlotte spinoff is a limited series based on the “reimagined and beloved character who captivated 82 Million households around the world in Season 1.”

According to the statement, Netflix is putting Shonda Rhimes, known for dramas like Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice, at the helm of the production. Rhimes will write and executive produce the Bridgerton spinoff, with Betsy Beers and Tom Verica helping her run the show. The title of the series will be released soon and more details will follow.

“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world,” Bela Bajaria, the head of global TV at Netflix said. “I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton. Shonda and her team are thoughtfully building out the Bridgerton universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love. And by planning and prepping all the upcoming seasons now, we also hope to keep up a pace that will keep even the most insatiable viewers totally fulfilled.”

With Seasons 3 and 4 of Bridgerton already confirmed, it seems Netflix is keen to capitalize on the first season’s success, not only by continuing the original story based on Julia Quinn’s bestselling books but by expanding the universe and its characters in ways previously unseen. Bridgerton will likely continue to grow, with more spinoffs and more stories to be told.

“As we continue to expand the world of Bridgerton, we now have the opportunity to devote even more of the Shondaland fold to the Bridgerton-verse,” the CEO of Shondaland explained. Fans will have plenty more jaw-dropping, nail-biting Bridgerton moments to look forward to, even beyond the Bridgerton brothers and sisters.

Along with the Bridgerton spinoff announcement, Netflix and Shondaland confirmed Jess Brownell as the showrunner for the future Bridgerton seasons. She is currently set as the showrunner for Seasons 3 and 4, though she may continue beyond this scope if the series continues to pull in massive views.

“It’s been incredibly rewarding working alongside Shonda, Betsy, and Chris Van Dusen on the first two seasons of Bridgerton,” Brownell admitted during the announcement. “And now, as these beloved characters are entrusted to me, I cannot wait to lend my unique vision to the next two seasons. I feel so fortunate to have found a home at Shondaland and to have the support of Shonda and Betsy as I move forward into this new chapter.”
