Calogero Duenes was shot and killed outside a Texas Chuck E. Cheese on Friday. The 24-year-old father of two was walking in with his 6-year-old daughter’s birthday cake when he was gunned down. The suspect is still at large.
According to reports, the shooting happened outside the Chuck E. Cheese in Humble, Texas. His wife, Amber Uresti, and their two girls, ages 6 and 3, walked inside the restaurant first. Calogero Duenes was in charge of the birthday cake and was the last of the family to walk in.
“I saw him,” Uresti said. “I saw him walking towards us. I told the lady my husband was on his way. I pointed at him, and the instant I turned around, he came running in through the door and he kept saying, ‘I got shot! I got shot!'”
Surveillance footage outside the Chuck E. Cheese showed the 24-year-old was walking across the parking lot when a car drove down the wrong way and almost hit the victim. Duenes and the driver shared words before a witness said they heard three gun shots.
The suspect, who reports say was driving a black Ford, drove away from the scene.
The father of two ran inside the restaurant before going outside and collapsing in the parking lot. His 6-year-old daughter, Serina Divine Duenes, saw her father collapse. The young man was taken to the hospital where he later passed away from his injuries.
According to Humble Police officers, no arrests have been made and the department is still trying to figure out the identity of the shooter.
Since his death, many of his family members are trying to understand what happened. His wife said, “He had no weapons. He was holding my daughter’s birthday cake. He had nothing on him. I don’t understand why.”
According to the mother of two, Duenes and her were about to celebrate their 10-year anniversary. The pair met in Corpus Christi, Texas when Amber Uresti was just 15 years old.
“We grew up together,” she said. “Every day for the last 10 years, it’s been me and him. I really don’t know what I’m going to do anymore. It’s really hard.” Uresti is busy planning funeral plans for Duenes, reports say that the mother and two daughters went back to Calogero Duenes’ hometown so he could be buried there.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover Calogero Duenes’ funeral expenses. So far, the page has raised over $39,000 for the family with an original goal of $20,000. Funeral details have not been released.
While Amber Uresti hasn’t said much about the loss of Calogero Duenes, she did reveal that his death has been the hardest on their oldest daughter, birthday girl Serina. According to the mother, “My daughter has been crying,” Uresti said. “She slept last night with her father’s shirt, crying until she fell asleep, and it breaks my heart. There’s nothing I can tell her. There’s no words to tell her other than, ‘Daddy is with you in your heart. He loves you.'”
Amber Uresti is hoping that the Humble Police Department will be able to bring justice to Duenes and their two children, who will now have to grow up without their father.
The police department has not released a statement about the tragic shooting that took place outside the Chuck E. Cheese, but the investigation into Calogero Duenes’ death is ongoing.
