Camila Cabello fought back after haters left upsetting body-shaming comments on her social media profile, reacting to her bikini photos. The singer embraced her body, as well as a healthy lifestyle, and is inspiring fans to do the same.

The candid photos were taken in June while Camila and her boyfriend Shawn Mendes were enjoying a day at a Miami Beach. Many of fans flooded her feed with support and love but there were others, including some tabloid headlines, that portrayed Camila’s body in a bad light.

The former Fifth Harmony member told reporters in a recent Bustle interview that she felt “liberated,” once she spoke her truth and took on those troll comments. Her new mantra is “Being at war with your body is so last season.”

After the photos first came out, Camila wrote, “Honestly first thing I felt was super insecure just IMAGINING what these pictures must look like, oh no! My cellulite! Oh no! I didn’t suck in my stomach!” She then added, “But then I was like… of course there are bad pictures, of course, there are bad angles, my body’s not made of f–king rock, or all muscle, for that matter, but the saddest part of young girls growing up in an airbrushed world is they’re seeking a perfection that’s not real.”

The singer wrote back to her fans that left her uplifting comments, saying that she loved them and thanking them for the positive support.

She also posted a recent TikTok about the new body-positive life that she is trying to live. And fans are here for it. She told reporters that after her TikTok went viral she was approached by fans who said that the video really resonated with them.

One fan wrote on Twitter, “YOU’RE A BEAUTIFUL NORMAL HUMAN WOMAN BEING, JUST LIKE THE REST OF US FLESHY BEINGS! This is normal, girls. Please follow the lead of real beauty and truth. Not superficial ideas that are unrealistic, dangerous & manipulating.”

In her TikTok, Camila tells fans that she is “grateful for this body that lets me do what I need to do. We are real women with curves and cellulite and stretchmarks and fat. And we gotta own that, baby.”

Another person that was really moved by Camila Cabello’s video was her boyfriend, Shawn Mendes. Shawn said that he also struggled with body image issues and that Camila had really helped him look past that destructive mindset. He revealed that he used to only sleep three hours a day so he could spend more time at the gym. He feared that fans would abandon him if he lost his “perfect body.”

When talking about his girlfriend, Shawn said that she is “so strong, so clear and confident with her [body] and so articulate and empathetic about other people’s… It really changed my view of mine.”

The couple really leaned on each other when trying to stop body shaming themselves. Shawn would tell Camila when he was having destructive thoughts, and Camila said that talking about it together really helped Shawn transform his mindset about his body.

Camila Cabello also said that therapy has helped her get to the place she is today. It made her realize that going to the gym excessively and never eating carbs was not a healthy life to live.

While she had dealt with toxic stress and anxiety, Camila said that she was able to get through a lot of it because of her mother, Sinuhe Estrabao. Camila said in the Bustle interview, “Imagine if I was out here, since 16, on my own? That would have been dramatic for me. Having [someone] that’s real, that’s not ever going to let you get out of line, has been so important to me. I think that’s why I never really got lost in the industry. I had challenges with my mental health, but I was never lost.”
