Cassie Laundrie, Brian Laundrie’s sister, spoke out Friday morning during an interview with Good Morning America. According to her, Gabby Petito and her boyfriend had fought all the time. She claimed that the pair would often fight and break up before reconciling shortly after.
As the search for the missing Long Island native continues, questions continue to arise as to what happened on the cross-country road trip. The police investigation has shed some light on the couple’s struggling relationship. In one instance, police were forced to separate Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie for one night after they got into a violent fight near a Utah convenience store.
The bodycam footage was released on Wednesday, leaving many questions to be answered. But Brian’s sister explained that fights like that were typical between the couple. Cassie Laundrie claimed she watched the video, which showed a rattled Petito after violence between her and her boyfriend broke out.
“It looked typical of both of them,” Cassie Laundrie admitted. “Whenever they’d fight, they’d take a break and be fine.” She said she’d seen that happen many times before. It was revealed earlier this week that both Petito and her boyfriend had struggled with anxiety and an unspecified mental health disorder. While speaking to police during the Aug. 12 incident, Gabby Petito told officers that the fight likely occurred because there was a strain on both of their mental states after traveling together for so long.
Petito was uncontrollably crying throughout the bodycam video. And Brian Laundrie sported a few scratch marks. It was revealed that while fighting together near the convenience store, Petito scratched her boyfriend in a fit of rage. He did not press charges, however, though police demanded that they remain separated for the rest of the night. Petito was instructed to drive her van and police escorted Brian Laundrie to a hotel for the night.
It wasn’t immediately clear how long the two split. Instagram posts of the couple at the National Park were dated after the Aug. 12 incident, indicating that they may not have stayed separated for very long.
Police did identify Brian Laundrie as a person of interest in Petito’s disappearance. They have not named the boyfriend a suspect just yet. No charges have been filed. Authorities have been suspicious of Brian Laundrie because he refuses to assist with the investigation. It was speculated that he was the only person who could shed light on the truth but refuses to cooperate.
“I haven’t been able to talk to him,” Cassie Laundrie admitted in her Good Morning America interview. “I wish I had information where I could give more.” She told reporters that she already gave her statement to the police, though she didn’t specify what information she relayed to authorities.
“Obviously me and my family want Gabby to be found safe,” Brian’s sister continued. “She’s like a sister and my children love her, and all I want is for her to come home safe and found and this to be just a big misunderstanding.”
According to reports, Cassie Laundrie’s comments frustrated the missing woman’s father, Joe Petito. He claimed that if the family really loved his daughter, they would be helping authorities find her. “If that’s that family’s version of love, to just ignore and not care that someone’s gone and people are looking for them and entire country’s looking for them, I mean, that explains how we got to where we are today.” Joe Petito explained. ”Because I mean, look at their version of what they call love.”
Richard Stafford, who is the lawyer for the Petito family, released a statement echoing Joe Petito’s sentiment. The statement revealed anger at the fact that the Laundries were not cooperating with police and that Brian Laundrie, who may be the only person that knows Gabby Petito’s last location, has remained silent.
“The family is devastated,” Stafford said at a press briefing. “Every day that this goes on, they get more and more devastated. They’re at the point that that desperation has turned to anger. They know that the Laundries know where their daughter is, and they will not tell them. That’s infuriating.”
