Did Kwanmaine Travion Boyd kill his girlfriend Cavanna Smith last month? Boyd allegedly shot Smith, 25, on Oct. 6 in broad daylight on a Houston street. Now he is wanted for capital murder.
Houston police issued an arrest warrant for her boyfriend. They located the accused killer’s truck in the driveway of an abandoned home, but he is still believed to be at large.
Now, police are searching for Boyd, who they believe kidnapped and killed her — just hours after finding out she was pregnant.
Police: Cavanna Smith was Killed by Boyfriend
According to authorities, three witnesses saw or heard Cavanna Smith arguing with Kwanmaine Travion Boyd at around 7 a.m. on Oct. 6 on Reid Street, within a few miles of the latter’s home, The Daily Beast reported.
The first witness said he heard the couple arguing while he was getting ready for work, and that he saw Boyd shoot Smith in the face before getting in his truck and fleeing the scene.
Another witness told investigators he was traveling on Reid Street at around the same time, with his windows rolled down, when he passed a man and woman arguing in the road near a parked truck with its hazard lights on.
The witness said the woman, now identified as Smith, asked him to call the police as he passed. He said he drove away when he noticed that the man, who police believe was Boyd, was holding a gun.
The third witness told police she lives on Reid Street and looked out of her window when she heard the couple arguing. She said she called 911 after seeing the man shoot the woman in the face.
In a series of chilling text messages obtained by local outlet KPRC, Smith reportedly told friends and family that she was in danger just hours before her murder.
“I’m at this location getting my money if anything happens to me,” Smith reportedly wrote her sister that morning, attaching her location to an area “at or near Boyd’s home,” the outlet reported.
A few moments later, Smith reportedly called a friend for help. According to the outlet, the friend told investigators she couldn’t clearly hear Smith and that the call ended abruptly.
Just after the call, the friend said she received a text from Smith, saying that she had been kidnapped.
“Why are you playing? Stop playing with me,” the friend reportedly responded.
Smith replied: “I’m not. I’m in the back of Kwan[‘s] truck.”
The last message Cavanna Smith sent, per the outlet, was at 6:44 a.m.
“He got my money and don’t wanna give it to me,” the text read.
By 6:45 a.m., calls to Smith’s phone were being forwarded directly to voicemail, her friends said. Only ten minutes later, witnesses reported seeing and hearing her final moments.
At about 7 a.m., Houston police said they responded to the third witness’ 911 call to find Smith lying dead in the street.
Smith Was Pregnant When She Died
According to local reports, Cavanna Smith was four and a half weeks pregnant at the time of her death.
The Daily Beast reported that investigators found heartbreaking signs of the 25-year-old’s pregnancy announcement while searching Kwanmaine Travion Boyd’s home — including two positive pregnancy tests, an ultrasound dated one day before her death, and a note for Boyd meant to break the news.
“Kwan, I know this isn’t what we expected but WE ARE expecting!” the card reportedly read.
Police have not yet established a motive in the apparent killing, and the search for the fugitive Boyd has been ongoing for at least a week.
Kwanmaine Travion Boyd is a Fugitive
Houston police said they issued a warrant for Boyd’s arrest on Nov. 9 — more than a month after three witnesses reported seeing him with Smith, and two reported seeing Boyd shoot Smith in the face.
But he is not in police custody as of Monday.
Police said they found what they believe to be Boyd’s truck on the 5400 block of Airport Boulevard — about 17 miles from Reid Street.
The vehicle was found parked in the driveway of a home that is reportedly abandoned.
