Cazzie David, comedian Larry David’s daughter, is happy everyone could relate to the viral video of her father covering his ears at a New York Fashion Week show. Now she’s explaining why her dad can’t stand loud noises.
Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the 27-year-old told hosts Alexandra Cooper and Sofia Franklyn that she thought what happened at NYFW was “disturbing,” but was glad everyone else thought it was funny.
The viral video of Larry David clearly not enjoying Staud’s Spring/Summer 2022 fashion show went viral earlier this month. Many people online found the clip very strange yet humorous, asking why he covered his ears or even attended the event.
“‘He didn’t want to go obviously, like, I know him,” Cazzie David explained, echoing online consensus of fans saying that it was weird to see Larry David at a NYFW event due to his well-known personality.
“I’m happy everyone thought it was so funny and relatable,” she said. “For me, it was like this is a man who was dragged to some place he doesn’t want to be, that he didn’t know what it would be. He doesn’t know what a fashion show is… He looks like he’s having a breakdown, like truly.”
The Cut’s Emilia Petrarca posted the viral clip, dubbed by commenters as the “best post of Fashion Week.”
“‘He looks so miserable and I obviously don’t like seeing my dad miserable, whether or not it’s funny,” Cazzie David said on Call Her Daddy.
Responding to commenters who thought it might have been a bit or a joke he was playing, Cazzie David said that she doesn’t think he’s ever done anything in his actual life that’s been staged that way.
“Me and my sister texted it to each other and we were both like, ‘Oy, this is so sad,” she said. “It was simply just too loud for him to be there. It’s very sad. It’s so weird how different your reaction can be than someone else’s.”
Joking on Instagram, Curb Your Enthusiasm co-star Jeff Garlin poked fun at the video as well, writing, “I don’t even know who he is anymore.” Curb Your Enthusiasm is expected to come back on Oct. 24 to HBO for Season 11.
Cazzie David also told Call Her Daddy about how she’s excited to star in the upcoming third season of Netflix’s superhero series The Umbrella Academy, and further displaced false internet rumors that she was asexual.
“It was so embarrassing” that such a rumor made the rounds on Instagram, she said. “It’s something that I can’t defend myself from because I can’t be like, ‘So weird, because I do f**k all the time and I love sex,’ because you just sound like you’re covering up.”
Cazzie David previously dated SNL‘s Pete Davidson from 2006 to 2008, and was recently spotted out to dinner with John Mayer, though the two are reportedly not romantically involved. She is currently single and says that she has learned a lot from her past relationships.
Larry David surprisingly just had dinner with Timothe Chalamet (maybe a Curb Your Enthusiasm cameo is in our future), and was recently delighted to have been cut from Barack Obama’s 60th birthday party due to Covid-19 slimming down attendance.
“I was so relieved, I screamed, ‘Thank you! Thank you!’” he said. “He must have thought I was insane. Then I hung up the phone, poured myself a drink, and finished my crossword puzzle.”
