Chris Cuomo was suspended from CNN “indefinitely, pending further evaluation,” Tuesday. The announcement came as a shock to many viewers and insiders of the news station. Many are asking if the news anchor will be fired for good.
The decision to suspend the news anchor came after reports from New York’s attorney general detailed Chris Cuomo’s involvement in his brother’s sexual harassment case. He allegedly helped former Gov. Cuomo prepare for the media’s involvement.
Documents said that Chris asked sources about information on his brother’s accusers that hadn’t come out publicly and informed his brother’s staff. He also helped them write their responses and press releases to those accusers.
A spokesperson for the former governor, Rich Azzopardi, said that the release of the documents was manipulative and was used to further damage Andrew Cuomo’s image.
He said, “New Yorkers are no one’s fool and James and her colleagues’ obvious misuse of government resources to damage political opponents is as obvious and repugnant as it is unethical and illegal.”
Text messages between Chris Cuomo and Andrew Cuomo’s top aide, Melissa DeRosa, showed that he regularly got them information on accusers. When Anna Ruch came out and said that Gov. Cuomo assaulted her at a 2019 wedding, the news anchor texted DeRosa and said, “I have a lead on the wedding girl.”
Chris Cuomo told investigators that asking other journalists for information was just business.
After they suspended the news anchor, CNN released a statement regarding the decision. They said, “The New York Attorney General’s office released transcripts and exhibits Monday that shed new light on Chris Cuomo’s involvement in his brother’s defense. The documents, which we were not privy to before their public release, raise serious questions. When Chris admitted to us that he had offered advice to his brother’s staff, he broke our rules and we acknowledged that publicly,” the spokesperson for CNN continued. “But we also appreciated the unique position he was in and understood his need to put family first and job second.”
The statement added that “however, these documents point to a greater level of involvement in his brother’s efforts than we previously knew. As a result, we have suspended Chris indefinitely, pending further evaluation.”
According to the news anchor, he never influenced CNN‘s coverage of Gov. Cuomo’s sexual harassment case.
Critics of the news anchor have been very vocal about firing him since it was first announced by The Washington Post in May that Chris was involved in Andrew’s case. Many have called for the news anchor to be fired and Charlotte Bennett called for the news station to “immediately take action.”
Some believe that Chris Cuomo wasn’t immediately fired or suspended because of the good ratings he brings to the network. His show, Cuomo Prime Time, averaged about 1.3 million viewers last year and is considered one of the most popular shows on CNN.
The show usually runs at 9 p.m. weeknights, and after the suspension of the news anchor, a second slot of Anderson Cooper’s news segment had to run in its place. If Cuomo is fired, the news station will have to deal with a significant hole in its programming.
Chris has not released a statement about his suspension or his future with CNN.
Andrew Cuomo resigned from his position as New York governor after 11 women came forward and revealed that Gov. Cuomo has sexually harassed them while in office. Many of the women were aides who worked under Cuomo.
