Days after his partner, Cheryl Burke, tested positive for Covid-19, Cody Rigsby has revealed that he also received a positive diagnosis. With the announcement made Thursday, fans are wondering if Cody Rigsby is done with DWTS 2021? What does this mean for his future in the competition. Will the Peloton instructor be able to continue?
“I have some news that I don’t want to be sharing with you but here it is: I have tested positive for covid — again — the second time this year,” Cody Rigsby said in an Instagram video.
The 34-year-old fitness instructor had the virus earlier in the year and then got fully vaccinated. Despite this, and taking “many precautions, following CDC guidelines,” he still found himself testing positive with a minor breakthrough case once again.
It probably didn’t help that his partner, Dancing with the Stars pro Cheryl Burke, tested positive right before Monday night’s episode. She also had a breakthrough case and was fully vaccinated when she received the heartbreaking positive diagnosis that meant she wouldn’t be able to compete.
“In comparison to when I had COVID earlier this year, it is night and day, so that must be the vaccine and the antibodies working, so we’re super grateful for that,” Cody revealed. “That being said, I’m going to go eat all the yummy food I can right now, as I still have my taste buds.”
“To properly rest and recover as well as avoid exposing others, I will be taking a break in the coming days,” he wrote on Instagram. “I appreciate all your support, and I’ll be back as soon as I am ready.”
The popular dancing competition series, which vowed to return as usual in the face of the pandemic, may now be without one of their competing pairs.
In the second round episode on Monday, judges were forced to evaluate Cody Rigsby and Cheryl Burke’s salsa performance based on a taped rehearsal video from earlier in the week. Many fans and news outlets had previously reported that Cody would be receiving a replacement partner for Monday night’s episode, but this plan must have been scrapped if true.
The dancing pair scored 24 out of 40 points, the same as their first round, which kept them from elimination. However, both Cody Rigsby and Cheryl Burke seem to have been eliminated by Covid-19 diagnoses, pending further information from the show.
“As far as my fate on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ we’re still trying to figure that out right now so please be patient with that answer.” Cody Rigsby said of his potential return.
With the announcement of him testing positive, it is highly unlikely that he will be able to appear on Monday night’s third round episode. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines recommends quarantining for at least 10 days, meaning there’s a good chance that he would miss the nest two episodes at the very least.
“Sending all our positive thoughts to Cody Rigsby! Get well soon. #DWTS,” the ABC show tweeted.
Rising in popularity during the pandemic, Cody Rigsby entered many Peloton bike users’ lives as they transitioned to working out at home. “I got to reap that success” of huge Peloton bike sales, “and I’m very, very grateful for that,” Cody told Us Weekly.
“I feel so bad for Cody,” Cheryl Burke said in an Instagram video after testing positive for Covid-19. “I feel like I’m letting him down.”
No other contestants besides Cody Rigsby and Cheryl Burke have tested positive. Without a statement from the show or its competitors, it seems as if, for now, the competition will still go on.
