Darius Sullivan and Xandria Harris face multiple charges in the murder of Bradley Police Sgt., Marlene Rittmanic in Illinois. State prosecutors are seeking both state and federal murder charges and are looking into charging the couple with the federal death penalty after the Wednesday murder of Marlene Rittmanic.
Both Darius Sullivan and Xandria Harris have been charged with the murder of a police officer and attempted murder of a police officer.
During a Monday bond hearing, both Harris and Sullivan were denied bail. Darius Sullivan is currently being held in an Indiana jail after he was arrested in North Manchester, Indiana, the day after the shooting. The 25-year-old is awaiting extradition back to Illinois.
Xandria Harris turned herself into Bradley Police hours after Sullivan was arrested.
According to reports, the shooting happened Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 9:56 p.m. Rittmanic and her partner, Officer Tyler Bailey, were called to the Comfort Inn on the 1500 block of North State Highway 50 after complaints of dogs barking inside a parked car.
Marlene Rittmanic ran the plates for the vehicle and discovered that it was registered to 26-year-old Xandria Harris, known associate of Darius Sullivan. Both officers went into the motel to ask if Harris and Sullivan had paid for a room.
Hotel workers pointed the officers to Room 308, which was registered to Sullivan. At the time of the shooting, Sullivan had outstanding warrants against him and had previously fled from Bradley police officers when they tried to arrest him. The Illinois man had failed to appear in court on a previous charge.
During Monday’s bond hearing, prosecutors said that officers knocked on the door of the room and asked Harris to come out and talk about the barking dogs. Rittmanic and Baliey continued to knock for 14 minutes before Xandria Harris exited the room.
Court documents said that she squeezed herself out of the motel room and blocked the door so officers could not arrest Sullivan.
Kankakee County State’s Attorney Jim Rowe told the court on Monday that after Harris refused to stop blocking the door, Darius Sullivan came out of the motel room with a 9mm gun. He shot Baliey once in the head and then shot at Rittmanic before chasing her down the hallway.
During a fight with Rittmanic, Sullivan’s gun locked, and he called for Harris to grab the sergeant’s weapon. He told her to “cock the gun,” before shooting Rittmanic twice with her own service weapon. The shots hit the officer in the neck. According to reports, Marlene Rittmanic begged for her life before being shot.
“Sgt. Rittmanic was pleading with them to, ‘Just leave, you don’t have to do this, please just go, please don’t, please don’t,’” Rowe said. “She was desperately pleading for her life.”
After the shooting, Darius Sullivan fled the scene while Xandria Harris went back into the motel room to gather their things and her three children. The two suspects remained at large until their arrests on Monday.
Both Marlene Rittmanic and Tyler Bailey were taken to the hospital after the tragic shooting. Rittmanic was pronounced dead, and Bailey is currently in critical condition. His fellow officers say the young man is fighting for his life.
During the suspects’ bond hearing, prosecutors argued that Xandria Harris helped Sullivan commit the murder and should be held equally responsible. They said that Harris, “actively assisted and enabled Darius Sullivan throughout the course of the murder of Sgt. Rittmanic and [attempted] murder of officer Bailey, and she is equally responsible.”
According to the Bradley Police Department, they have received overwhelming support after the loss of Marlene Rittmanic and the injury of Tyler Baliey. They posted on their Facebook page and said that any donations for the officers and their families can be sent to any branch of the Federated Bank, in Bradley, Ill.
