Denise Richards was blindsided this week when a court ruled that her ex-husband, actor Charlie Sheen, wouldn’t have to pay child support for their two children. Sources close to the actress say that she’s upset about the ruling. Are money problems the cause of her tears?
A Los Angeles court judge ruled that Charlie, 56, would have to pay “zero dollars in child support,” to Denise, 50. The couple share two daughters together, Sami, 17, and Lola, 16. Currently, Lola is the only one that lives with their mother.
According to a source close to the actress, Denise was “very saddened by the entire situation,” and that “She’s a mother who wants to protect her kids,” the source added. “They need structure and rules and Charlie is very permissive. Denise just wants the best for them.”
Denise Richards joined The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills back in 2018, and her money problems took center stage in the reality TV drama. During her time on Season 10, she became involved in a lawsuit with American Express.
The credit card company claimed that the actress owed over $20,000 on a credit card account that she closed earlier that year. The charges on the card had occurred over four years.
During her time on RHOBH, Denise’s child support problems with Charlie also became a hot topic among the Housewives. While the ladies went to NYC for Fashion Week, Charlie called his ex-wife a “coward,” and Denise spilled to her co-stars about the money problems that she was having with her ex-husband.
“I’ve been called worse by him. Actually, that’s tame,” Denise said. “He hasn’t paid me child support in over a year. And he’s very lucky cause I never took him to court. It is such a toxic road. It brings up so much anxiety. I’m so done dealing with this.”
The actress recently claimed that she never knew of the court hearing to talk about child support and that Charlie specifically had it on October 4, because he knew she would be out of town. The actor had originally filed two years ago, but kept pushing the date back. Denise was not present at the hearing because she was filming for her new movie, Wickenburg.
She said that Charlie hadn’t paid her child support in over four years.
Charlie and his lawyers tell a different story. His lawyers said that since neither daughter lives with Denise full time, Charlie shouldn’t be required to pay anymore. Sami recently moved in with her dad full time, and Lola stays with Charlie when Denise is traveling for work. His lawyers also said that Charlie is owed money by Denise because he overpaid his ex-wife over the years.
“I think what transpired today is extremely fair,” Charlie told Us Weekly. “It speaks to not just today, but it speaks historically to that same fairness.”
Three weeks ago, 17-year-old Sami moved in permanently with her father and claimed on TikTok that her mom’s house was Hell. The videos have since been put on private, but Sami also said that she felt “trapped,” at Denise’s house and alleged that the home was abusive.
The 17-year-old wrote, “1 year ago today: trapped in an abusive household, hated myself, would go days without eating or sleeping, insanely depressed, hated school, etc…now: finally moved out of the hell house, had a spiritual awakening, own 2 cats, happy single, full of self love, and dropped out of high school :).”
In response to her daughter’s claims, Denise Richards said that she tried was to provide rules and boundaries for her daughters, but Sami didn’t want to listen. According to a source, Denise is sad that her family had to split up this way.
