Donald Mobelini, the Hazard High School principal in Kentucky, is being investigated after disturbing photos surfaced of him and other members of his staff getting lap dances from male students during a Homecoming event. The pictures, which were shared by the Hazard High School Athletic Department Facebook, have since been deleted.
According to the high school, which is located in Hazard, Kentucky, the photos were part of a Homecoming event called the “Man Pageant.” Disturbing photos show male students dressed in bikinis and lingerie giving lap dances to their principal and other staff members. Female students are also seen wearing Hooters waitress costumes and male students are seen getting paddled.
Donald “Happy” Mobelini, as he is known by the school, is seen in many of the photos. The principal has yet to comment on the Homecoming events or the outrage that has been pouring in from parents across the country.
Along with being the principal, Mobelini is also the mayor of Hazard, Kentucky.
Following the incident, Hazard Independent Superintendent Sondra Combs released a statement regarding the Homecoming photos and said that she would personally be running an investigation into the Hazard High School principal.
She said, “First, I wish to address some questions around the incident. The activities were part of Homecoming festivities and were driven by the students. We strive to foster creativity in our students, but unfortunately, this time it was carried too far.”
Combs later added, “While Homecoming is an annual tradition, there has never been any issue raised prior to this year. Now that an issue has arisen, we are taking this opportunity to review policy and procedures to make certain that it does not happen again.”
According to Combs, the district has handed out punishments for those involved in the Homecoming incident, but she wasn’t able to go into details since it was a personal matter.
Those who know Donald Mobelini were surprised that he let this event happen. Aster Sizemore, a board member for the district, said, “Normally, the principal, Happy Mobelini, is pretty dad-gum strict, so that surprises me, unless someone pulled something out of a hat,” Sizemore said. “A kid comes to school with a short dress, you know, he makes them go home and change.”
Aster Sizemore was at Hazard High School on Tuesday when the events happened, but was not present for the pageant.
This is not the first time that Principal Donald Mobelini has been investigated for his actions. The principal and mayor is currently being sued by a former student who says that a lack of chaperones during a school trip to New York City led to her being sexually and physically assaulted by a male student back in 2017.
The lawsuit was filed back in 2019 and according to the former student, Mobelini and two other chaperones left students alone to walk around Times Square, which reportedly led to some students purchasing alcohol. The female student was later assaulted at around 4:00-5:00 a.m. on October 29 2017 when she was walked back to her room.
According to her, the Hazard High School principal and his chaperones did not appropriately investigate her assault. The lawsuit says that Mobelini and the chaperones told her that it was “all her fault,” and that if she reported the incident it would “go on the male student’s permanent record.”
A jury trial is scheduled for August 2022, and both Mobelini and the chaperones have asked for the lawsuit to be dismissed.
In 2008, the principal was also investigated for his involvement in student drinking. According to reports, photos of the principal surfaced on Facebook and showed him driving his daughter and four other students in his car while they drank and smoked.
Another incident took place earlier in the year, when 12 students were arrested for underage drinking on the Hazard High School football field. According to police, Donald Mobelini was with them 30 minutes before police arrived, but the principal said that they weren’t drinking when he was there.
An investigation into the Homecoming event is ongoing.
