Meghan Markle‘s mother, Doria Ragland, has been helping the Duke and Duchess of Sussex since baby Lili Diana was born. Now that Meghan and Doria are back to living on the same coast again, it’s become far easier for the yoga instructor to visit her daughter and grandchildren. And, of course, Doria couldn’t be happier.
Prince Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, welcomed Lili Diana Mountbatten-Windsor on Friday, June 4. Because Harry’s family is far away, Doria, 64, has stepped in, a source revealed to Us Weekly. The couple is thrilled to have Meghan’s mom at their home in Montecito, Calif. “She can’t wait to spend more time with her grandson and get to know him properly, once the pandemic is over,” the source added.
Doria adores her grandchildren, and Meghan and her mother have quite the “unique, unbreakable bond,” an insider told Closer Weekly. Meghan has always been able to count on her mother, Doria Ragland. Although they recently relocated, the couple is still only a short drive away from her mom in Los Angeles.
The source also revealed that Doria is “definitely a positive influence in Archie’s life.”
Meghan said in an interview with Glamour back in August of 2017, “For me to watch this level of life-long sensitivity to nurturing and caregiving, but at the same time my mom has always been a free spirit. She’s got dreadlocks and a nose ring. She just ran the LA Marathon. We can just have so much fun together, and yet, I’ll still find so much solace in her support. That duality coexists the same way it would in a best friend.”
Doria was raised in Los Angeles with her mom Jeanette Arnold and dad Alvin Ragland. She met her daughter’s father, Thomas Markle, back in the late 1970s when she was a temp at a production studio.
“I like to think he was drawn to her sweet eyes and her Afro, plus their shared love of antiques. Whatever it was, they married and had me,” Meghan recalled in a 2015 Elle essay.
Doria met the Queen for tea ahead of the May 2018 nuptials, and assisted Meghan in the transition into the royal family. Meghan’s father, Thomas, as he refused to even walk her down the aisle at her wedding.
The mother and daughter duo share a deep bond and love, one that Meghan will pass down to baby Lili Diana. The yoga instructor and former social worker used to call her daughter “Flower.” So the moniker “Lili” is not only a nod to Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana, but also to Meghan’s own mother.
