Emily and Michael Johnson didn’t plan on recording the birth of their child. But when Emily went into labor unexpectedly on their front lawn, their Ring doorbell camera caught the whole thing on video.
The Vacaville, California couple told local news outlet KCRA last week that Emily gave birth to a healthy baby boy — Thomas, the couple’s second son, reports indicate.
While things didn’t exactly go according to the couple’s plan, Emily and Michael Johnson said they were thankful for the first responders who assisted in the birth, and thrilled to welcome their newest child to the family.
Emily and Michael Johnson Didn’t Expect to Give Birth at Home
Before Thomas Johnson’s front yard birth was caught by the couple’s Ring doorbell camera, Emily Johnson said the pair had been envisioning a more traditional delivery — including an epidural to ease the pain.
“We had been wanting to get pregnant for about six months before we ended up getting pregnant,” she told KCRA.
Emily added that she was very much looking forward to the end of her pregnancy.
“I was really eager to be done,” she told the outlet last week. “I was hoping he [Thomas] was going to come early, but we never really knew.”
On Nov. 4, the couple told Fox News, everything seemed to be going according to plan. Emily was experiencing contractions that evening, but they were 10 minutes apart, and living “about a mile or so” from their local hospital, the Johnsons said they felt “pretty confident” that they would make it to the maternity ward before Thomas arrived.
But at around 10:30 p.m. that night, Emily and Michael Johnson told the cable network, the length of time between her contractions suddenly fell to five minutes — the tell-tale sign that it’s time to head to the hospital.
It wasn’t long before the contractions were occurring every two minutes — and then every one minute — Emily told reporters.
“Then the contractions went from three minutes to two minutes to one minute in a matter of 20 to 30 minutes, and we are like, ‘Oh, we got to get into the car, we have to go,'” she told KCRA.
Just as the Johnsons were putting their bags in the trunk of the family car to make their way to the hospital, Emily realized there was no time left to make the short trip to the hospital.
“Once they hit that three, two, one and I’m standing at the car door and they started occurring every 30 seconds, I was like, ‘There’s no way I’m getting in this car, even for a five-minute drive,’” she told Fox News.
Sweaty, nauseated, and ready to go, Emily said she reclined in a patch of grass on the couple’s front lawn and waited for Thomas’ arrival.
“I’m just like, ‘I’m going to get on the grass,'” she told the local outlet. “‘I’m going to be here. This is my spot.'”
Michael told Fox News that when his wife took a seat on the front lawn, he knew his second son was going to be born at home.
“As soon as she wouldn’t start moving, it was like, oh okay, this is going to happen here,” he told the network. “I’m not going to be able to get her anywhere.”
The Birth Gets Caught on Ring Camera
Just then, Emily’s mother Kristy had arrived to care for Emily and Michael Johnson’s 3-year-old son, Blake, while Emily delivered his new little brother, Fox News reported. That’s when the couple said they called 911 and waited for first responders to help deliver their family’s newest member.
Emily said the experience was uncomfortable, if not altogether rustic.
“I felt like a cow giving birth in a field,” she told Fox. “It was really bizarre and kind of primal. And at the same time, I was so uncomfortable. It was like, I can’t believe this is actually happening.”
She continued: “”I was just like, ‘Oh my god, I’m giving birth on the lawn. This is not where I want to be.’”
Just as first responders arrived at the couple’s Vacaville home, Emily had given birth to her newest son.
“By the time they [medical personnel] walked up to me, I had a baby in my arms crying,” Emily’s mother Kristy said to KCRA. “It was unreal.”
“I just laid back in the grass and took a nice deep breath,” Emily told the local outlet. “I never want to do that again.”
The whole birth was caught by the couple’s Ring Camera. While the pair said they hadn’t intended to record Thomas’ birth, they look forward to having a permanent memento of his first moments.
Emily and Michael Johnson also said they were grateful for the camera’s tastefully obscured angle.
“I’m just thankful that I was facing in that direction because otherwise, I don’t think we’d be able to share the video footage with anybody,” Emily told local reporters.
Shortly after Thomas arrived, the couple was escorted to the hospital, where Emily and her new baby were cleaned up and sent on their way.
“I joke that I was like a cow giving birth in the field,” she told KCRA with a laugh. “Because once I got to the hospital, I had grass clippings falling right off me and the nurses were wiping dirt off my knee and I’m like, ‘Oh, I did give birth in the lawn.’”
