Erica Mena filed for divorce after less than two years with her husband Safaree Samuels. The Love & Hip Hop star claimed the marriage is “irretrievably broken” and is fighting to keep primary custody of her 1-year-old daughter, Safire. Erica also wants “exclusive use” of their home and is asking for child support.
Erica is also pregnant with baby number two and she’s seeking joint legal custody of their second child and wants to “have final decision-making authority over legal custody matters” for both children. Both she and Safaree are legally separated but are still living under the same roof – yikes.
The divorce is no surprise given the incessant fighting between the two celebs. Safaree Samuels famously took to Twitter to describe his relationship status with Erica Mena after a particularly intense round of fighting. He said in a since-deleted Twitter post that he was “walking away” from Erica and called their marriage his “biggest mistake.”
The divisive nature was put on stage for the world to see and Erica quickly shot back saying that, “since you always run to social media like a little girl I might as well join in. I absolutely agree with you on this. You are the most selfish, vain, and inconsiderate person. And not just with me but your only daughter!”
Though the couple made up in February, other celebrities had already noted the damage. Wendy Williams was particularly curious about Erica’s relationship and the former model was not happy about it.
Wendy spoke about Erica and Safaree on the “Hot Topics” segment of her show, saying that the couple needed to “grow up.” Erica took to Twitter, threatening the media personality.
“@WendyWilliams At this point let’s link up so I can beat your ass,” Erica Mena tweeted, and since then, the couple’s drama has been on the down-low. And though they fight… often, fans believed the couple would sort it out.
After her pregnancy announcement, Erica posted an Instagram Story claiming that she and her husband were just fine following their countless spats. “Granted, there’s been mistakes made, immaturely, but a marriage is a marriage. And unfortunately, there’s been mishaps. In any marriage, s–t happens. When you’re in the public eye, my husband and I have both realized that things should be kept in.”
Fans thought they had secretly taken Wendy Williams’ advice. Instead, the couple decided to throw in the towel altogether. Even a bun in the oven isn’t going to keep the wedding rings on.
Earlier this month, Erica Mena explained that though she is “supposed to be focused on my baby that’s on the way,” she is instead “here alone worrying about the safety of me and my babies in my own home.”
The news of the couple’s divorce comes less than two years after they tied the knot in an October 2019 wedding. Their rich history throughout the Love & Hip Hop franchise, including versions set in New York, Hollywood, and Atlanta couldn’t keep them together, and neither was their appearance on Scared Famous in 2017 that finally linked them romantically.
