Fletcher Clardy III was charged with attempted rape in Kansas City, Mo. The hotel worker made a duplicate key to get into a hotel guest’s room in an attempt to assault her. The guest, who has not been named, was able to escape the assault and Clardy was later picked up by police. Officers are still investigating.
Clardy is currently being held at the Jackson County Detention Center and is being charged with one count of rape/attempted rape in the first degree. His bond was set for $150,000 and he is scheduled to have a bond review on Monday, Jan. 10 and appear at the Jackson County Courthouse.
According to reports, the attempted assault took place on Dec. 17 at Hotel Phillips in downtown Kansas City. The woman told police that she had come into the city for a business trip and was staying at the hotel with two coworkers and her boss. The four of them sat at the bar watching the Kansas City Chiefs game before she went back up to pack.
At around 11:45 p.m. she decided to go back down to the bar to have a couple drinks. The woman reported that it was Clardy who served her and other guests. She then went back up to her room around 2:00 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. and she remembers locking the door.
She then woke up at 4 a.m. and found Fletcher Clardy III on top of her. The front desk worker was allegedly taking of her pajamas before exposing himself to the victim. She reportedly said, “Get the fuck off of me! Who the hell are you? Get away from me! Get the hell out of here!”
The suspect then responded and said, “Sorry, I thought you wanted it,” before leaving her room. The victim recognized his voice from their interactions at the front desk and the bar. The woman called her boss in tears, and together they called the police. According to her boss, the woman was crying when he got to her hotel room and was very distraught about the sexual assault.
Police officers were given access to hotel surveillance footage and a transaction history report for the woman’s hotel room. Video footage showed the Missouri hotel worker making a duplicate key when the lobby was empty, and then records show the hotel room was accessed with that key around 4:10 a.m.
Fletcher Clardy III was arrested by Kansas City police on Dec. 30 and taken into custody. Hotel Phillips advised the suspect that he was fired from his position because he violated multiple hotel policy rules and duplicated keys when he wasn’t supposed to.
The Missouri hotel has not released a statement about the conduct of their former employee or the investigation that surrounds the hotel.
According to the Missouri hotel worker’s Facebook page, Clardy graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and recently got married in August 2021. Photos on his social media show him holding a degree in 2019. There was also a wedding photo of Clardy and his wife from 2021. It also appears that the 30-year-old has a child.
His family has not made a comment regarding his attempted rape charge or his arrest. Police continue to investigate the assault to understand what happened.
