Viewers of this year’s Oscars made some horrible comments about Halle Berry’s new haircut. But the brunette beauty knew how to laugh it off and take it in stride.
The 54-year-old actress showed off her new blunt bob at the Oscars this past Sunday – a short cut with straight-across bangs. Halle looked beautiful in her Dolce & Gabbana gown. But it was the new haircut that had everyone buzzing.
People compared Halle to Johnny Depp in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Edna Mode from the Incredibles, and Beyoncé’s super-short bangs in 2014. Someone even went as far as to compare it to the terrible haircut Claire got in the show Fleabag. The jokes became cruel fast, but Halle didn’t seem to mind.
Classy as always, Halle Berry responded with laughter of her own. She joined in on the joke by retweeting a video someone shared comparing her to a man in a wig. Berry added to the “halle berry tonight” caption with one of her own: a weary and laughing emoji. Even before Halle found the tweet, it had gained upwards of 50,000 likes. But her easy-going reaction made the post that much better!
Hours before Berry arrived at the Oscars, her hairstylist Sara Seward posted a hint about the transformation. The image shows Berry’s cut hair on the floor with a caption that says, “We came to play … ✂️✂️✂️ @halleberry #oscars2021.” Clearly, Seward had no idea of the negative reaction her work would get over social media, but thankfully Berry did indeed show up to play with haters over Twitter.
This isn’t the first time Halle Berry has chosen to debut a new look at the Oscars. In 2017, Berry presented an award in a gorgeous Versace dress and made headlines for her natural curls. At the time, Berry told Vogue, “With this look, I celebrate my natural hair by allowing it to be wild and free.”
The actress has been known for her dramatic transformations after rising to stardom with the classic pixie cut and trying out different styles just for fun over the years. In the early 2000s, Halle Berry walked red carpets with long curly hair, then cut it to a mohawk in 2012.
Maybe her blunt bob shouldn’t be as much of a surprise as people are making it out to be. After all, one of Halle Berry’s most famous quotes is: “When you have short hair, there’s just a feeling of here I am. What you see is what you get. And there’s a confidence that comes with wearing short hair and I like the way that makes me feel.”
