Hannah Gittings, the girlfriend of Anthony Huber, spoke out Thursday during the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse, who shot and killed Huber in Kenosha, Wisconsin last summer.

Rittenhouse, 18, is on trial for the murder of Huber, 26, and another man, 36-year-old Joseph Rosenbaum, during police brutality protests in August 2020. Prosecutors are arguing that Rittenhouse, who was then 17 year old, is guilty of murder, while his defense contends that the teen was acting in self defense.

In an emotional statement to the New York Post Thursday, Gittings, 25, said she had “sympathy” for Rittenhouse, a “dumbass kid” who she said was trying to be “king of the world” when he traveled to Kenosha with a rifle during an episode of civil unrest.

Hannah Gittings Delivers Emotional Statement

Gittings, who was with her boyfriend Anthony Huber the night he was killed by Kyle Rittenhouse, told the Post she didn’t believe the 18-year-old shooter had come to the protests armed with a rifle to protect local businesses, as he has said.

“If these people had just done what they said they were going to be doing, standing outside of the property making sure nobody was ruining these buildings and businesses, whatever, that’s cool, but you weren’t,” Gittings told the outlet.

“This kid was walking around like hot s—t, looking for a reason to say, ‘Oh I gotta do something about this,’” she continued.

Hannah Gittings said Kyle Rittenhouse shot her boyfriend Anthony Huber because he was a 'dumbass kid,' adding she doesn't believe the teen was in Kenosha to protect property.

The 25-year-old said she felt Rittenhouse was too young to understand the circumstances of the Kenosha protests and his actions.

“I do have a lot of sympathy for this kid, because he is just a kid to me, so it was just like a really dumbass kid who unfortunately became the figurehead for this,” Gittings said.

“The outcome of this trial, it could go literally anyway in the world, good or bad for us and it still would not change any of this for us,” she told the outlet.

Girlfriend: Anthony Huber Was Not a ‘Rioter’

Hannah Gittings said that she took issue with the Rittenhouse defense team’s bid to portray Huber as a rioter or a looter.

“There’s no proof of that anywhere, and I was with him that entire night. We were not doing anything like that,” she told the Post, adding it had been “difficult” to watch the trial unfold.

Gittings said she and her boyfriend had gone to the protest to record videos of the unrest, and that Huber had only struck Rittenhouse with his skateboard after the teen had already shot Rosenbaum and was trying to flee the scene.

After being hit by the skateboard, Rittenhouse shot Huber.

Comparing the intentions of both young men that night, Gittings said the “difference in character” between Rittenhouse and her boyfriend was stark.

“One of them goes out, taking advantage of a vulnerable situation so that he can live out his fantasy of being king of the world,” she said of Rittenhouse.

“And one of them [is] out there doing absolutely nothing, nothing f—king wrong and being presented with yes, an active shooter situation, and leaping into action without a second thought of his own safety,” Gittings said of her late boyfriend.

To local outlet CBS 58, Gittings said the trial had opened old wounds.

“Pretty surreal, I would first and foremost think after a year passed, it was a lot of closure for some of the things,” she said. “It’s triggering for a lot of us and to me it feels like how did it last year.”

Rittenhouse Faces Life Sentence If Convicted

If convicted of first-degree intentional homicide, Kyle Rittenhouse faces a life sentence, according to Reuters

The teen is also facing an attempted murder charge for shooting 27-year-old Gaige Grosskreutz, who lost part of his arm but survived. That charge carries a maximum sentence of 60 years, the wire service reported.

Additionally, Rittenhouse is being tried for two felony counts of reckless endangerment of bystanders to the incident, a felony that could carry a 12 year prison sentence

He was originally charged with a misdemeanor for illegally possessing a weapon, though Judge Bruce Schroeder has decided to drop that charge, according to Reuters.
