Regina King shared the devastating news in a statement. “Our family is devastated at the deepest level by the loss of Ian,” the statement said. “He is such a bright light who cared so deeply about the happiness of others. Our family asks for respectful consideration during this private time. Thank you.”
Ian was Regina’s only son. The 51-year-old actress and her ex-husband Ian Alexander Sr are trying to come to terms with what happened.
A cause of death for the young man has not been reported, and it is unclear what led him to take his own life.
Ian Alexander Jr was a musician and DJ. He performed under the stage name Desduné, and had recently released a single called Green Eyes on Jan. 7. The 26-year-old had performances scheduled for later in the month.
The young man was regularly Regina’s date to her numerous award shows. Mother and son attended the Oscars together back in 2019 when Regina King won an award for Best Supporting Actress. They also made an appearance at the 2019 Golden Globes together, where Ian called Regina a “super mom.”
Last year, Ian posted a touching tribute to his mother for her 50th birthday. The musician took to Instagram and said, “Happy birthday to my co, so extremely proud of you and inspired by your love, artistry, and gangsta! To be able to watch you take this lifetime by its neck and make it yours is something i will forever be grateful for.
The 26-year-old added, “but to have you as my mother is the greatest gift I could ask for. To be all that you are while always having the time to be there, love and support me unconditionally is truly remarkable. The whole marvel universe ain’t got shit on you, you’re the real superhero! Love you mom! This day and everyday YO DAY!!”
The Oscar-award-winning actress has previously opened up about her son and how much she loved him. In 2007, Regina talked about the difficulties of being a single parent and said that the unconditional love she had for Ian Alexander Jr kept her going.
“You don’t know what unconditional love is. You may say you do, but if you don’t have a child, you don’t know what that is,” she explained at the time. “When you experience it, it’s the most fulfilling [thing] ever.”
The mother and son had matching tattoos that said, “unconditional love” in Aramaic. Regina has hers on her arm, while Ian’s tattoo was on his shoulder. According to Regina, they got the tattoos after taking Kabbalah classes together.
“We were taking Kabbalah classes,” Regina talked about the design on The View in 2017. “He said, let’s choose three [designs] each and not tell each other which ones they are and whichever one is matching, that’s the one we’re going to get tattooed — and we both chose unconditional love.”
Since his death, many people have reached out to Regina King to offer their condolences about the loss of Ian Alexander Jr. Fellow musician Kid Cudi tweeted, “My heart hurts for Regina King and her family. God please watch over them.”
This is a developing story.
