Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss inadvertently became a huge topic at this year’s Oscars after Chris Rock made a joke about her baldness.
It turns out Will Smith’s wife has been dealing with alopecia for years. But Alopecia is an autoimmune disorder that impacts the body’s hair follicles and causes hair loss and bald spots. Jada Pinkett Smith first opened up about her condition in 2018 during a Red Table Talk episode. At the time, the actress was known for wearing hair wraps and turbans to hide her alopecia.
She said, “A lot of people have been asking why I’ve been wearing turbans. Well, I haven’t talked about it. It’s not easy to talk about, but I am going to talk about it.”
Doctors haven’t identified the cause of Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia, but the actress believes her condition was caused by stress.
The 50-year-old said it was terrifying when her hair first started falling out, but putting her condition in perspective has helped her come to terms with her alopecia.
“And I’ll tell you it was terrifying when it first started. I was in the shower one day and then just handfuls of hair, just in my hands, and I was like ‘oh my God am I going bald? It was one of those times in my life when I was literally shaking with fear. People are out here with cancer, with sick children… I watch the higher power take things every day and if the higher power wants to take my hair? That’s it? God, you want my hair?,” the actress said.
The actress added that creating those hair wraps made her feel powerful against her condition. She said, “When my hair is wrapped, I feel like a queen.”
In July 2021, Jada Pinkett Smith posted photos of herself with a completely shaved head. She said that her daughter, Willow, made her do it. She felt that it was time to let go of her hair. The 50-year-old posted a photo of herself and Willow with matching shaved heads.
She said in her caption, “Willow made me do it because it was time to let go BUT … my 50’s are bout to be Divinely lit with this shed.”
Since the actress opened up about her condition, many of her fans have praised her for her strength. After the Academy Awards, one person tweeted, “Jada is a CURRENT inspiration for SO many people who live with the same or similar subcategory of her condition. To have someone famous try use her as the BUTT of his joke for clout is disgusting. Chris Rock should know better!”
Another person said, “On that note, Jada Pinkett Smith having alopecia is a terrible thing to joke about. It’s a serious disease affecting Black girls and women especially and wtf you look like joking about a Black women’s hair in front of a white audience anyway.”
While Will Smith apologized to the Academy after he slapped Chris Rock, the incident has divided the Internet. Many are wondering if the actor deserves to keep his Oscar because of his conduct during the ceremony.
After the incident, the official Academy Twitter account released a statement and said, “The Academy does not condone violence of any form. Tonight, we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.”
