Jazz Jennings opened up about her mental health struggles and how she is humiliated by how much weight she has gained. The 21-year-old transgender activist was candid in the Season 7 trailer for her TLC show, I Am Jazz, and said that her family sometimes fat-shames her.
“I do experience fat-shaming from my family,” Jazz said. “It makes me feel really humiliated.”
One scene of the trailer showed the family sitting down for dinner, and they were making fun of the amount of butter that Jazz had put on the pasta.
Her family argued that they don’t fat-shame her, but are just surprised at the amount of weight she has gained in over two years. The reality TV star said that she is ready to make a change, but some of her family members aren’t sure if she’s going to stick to what she says.
In another scene, her mother, Jeanette Jennings, confronted her daughter about always making empty promises. Jeanette said that it didn’t matter what they did to help her, Jazz always seems to fall off the wagon. She said, “You keep on making empty promises. You’re like ‘I got this. I can do this. I’m gonna change.'”
Jazz told her mother that it’s different now because she’s got so much on the line. A lot of the Season 7 trailer shows Jazz working with dieticians and her family to try to figure out better habits for her eating.
The reality TV star told fans that two years ago she was getting ready to attend college at Harvard, but that ongoing mental health struggles caused her to defer her admission. Those mental health problems also caused her to develop a binge-eating disorder and it is the cause of her 100-pound weight gain.
“I started binge eating, and I gained weight, and more weight, and more weight. And now, almost 100lbs heavier, here I am today,” said Jazz. The young woman also admitted that some of her medications also caused her to overeat.
Jazz first opened up about her weight gain struggles last June. The star posted a Instagram post showing off her “big ole belly,” and got candid with fans about her struggles and how she wants to finally change her life.
She said, “I’m posting this photo because it’s time for me to address my weight gain and hold myself accountable. I’m ready to change my ways; I’ve been saying I’m ready to turn over a new leaf, but I’m running out of trees now. I’m ready to take the initiative and create positive changes when it comes to my health and body.”
Fans rallied around the young star and many posted uplifting comments on her Instagram post. One user wrote, “I hope she gets help. I have struggled with weight my whole life and finally got the message regarding my health at 72. I am 74 now and at my ideal weight for my age. It is harder, and harder the older and more set in our ways.”
Others told Jazz Jennings that she looked beautiful even with the weight gain. Another fan commented, “Your still adorable 🌼stay focused 🤓.”
Jazz Jennings is one of the youngest documented people to come out as transgender. The activist said that she first came out at five years old. Her journey has been documented on TLC’s I Am Jazz since 2015.
The 21-year-old has inspired many people with her story and is currently the honorary co-founder of the TransKids Purple Rainbow Foundation.
Season 7 of I Am Jazz premieres on TLC on Nov. 30.
