Jessica Simpson posted an unrecognizable photo of herself to celebrate four years of sobriety. In her Instagram post, the singer opened up about the low place that she was in when that photo was taken.
In her recent book, Open Book, the singer revealed that she had been battling an addiction to alcohol and pills because of trauma that was caused by sexual abuse that she experienced as a child. The throwback photo shows a puffy face Jessica in a pink tracksuit, and it appears that the country singer had been crying.
In her post, Jessica revealed that this photo was taken back on November 1, 2017 and that she barely recognized herself and still had a lot of self discovery to work through during that time.
She wrote, “Personally, to do this I needed to stop drinking alcohol because it kept my mind and heart circling in the same direction and quite honestly I was exhausted. I wanted to feel the pain so I could carry it like a badge of honor.”
The singer continued and said, “I wanted to live as a leader does and break cycles to advance forward- never looking back with regret and remorse over any choice I have made and would make for the rest of my time here within this beautiful world. I can’t believe it has been 4yrs! It feels like maybe 2. I think that is a good thing. Ha.”
Fans and fellow celebrities flooded her post with congratulations on her four years of sobriety and praised her for having the ability to open up and be honest about her past.
Chelsea Handler wrote, “WILDLY HONEST,” while another fan said, “You can totally read the vulnerability and strength waiting for you in the years to come by looking at this photo. I love you. You have been a bright light in my life for many years. Thanks for always being so open. Congrats on your journey.”
Many of the comments on her inspiring Instagram post were from fans who had also struggled with sobriety and had found peace in being sober. The fans congratulated Jessica on how far she had come but also shared their own milestones of sobriety.
One fan wrote, “Thank you for sharing!!! I am currently 8 months sober and this post resonates with me so much.”
The singer finished her post by talking about the change that she had to make to feel happier. She said, “The real work that needed to be done in my life was to actually accept failure, pain, brokenness, and self sabotage. The drinking wasn’t the issue. I was. I didn’t love myself. I didn’t respect my own power.”
The shocking before and after photos are not the only time that Jessica Simpson has opened up about how she has changed her life for the better. While on the Today Show last April, the singer revealed that she doesn’t know how much she weighs and that she threw away her scale a long time ago.
Jessica Simpson said that she didn’t want her weight to define who she was.
“I have no idea how much I weigh. Like, I just want to feel good and be able to zip my pants up. If I don’t, I have another size. I have every size,” she said.
