Professional daredevil Jonathan Goodwin was seriously injured when a terrifying stunt went wrong at a rehearsal for America’s Got Talent: Extreme, producers have confirmed.

“During a rehearsal last evening for America’s Got Talent: Extreme, an accident occurred in which escape artist Jonathan Goodwin was injured while performing his act,” representatives for the show told Fox News in a statement. “

“He was responsive and was immediately taken to the hospital where he is continuing to receive medical care.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family as we await further updates on his condition.”

TMZ obtained the chilling 911 call placed by the on-set medic when Jonathan Goodwin missed the airbag after a fall and hit his head on the ground.

The medic said Goodwin was “agonal and posturing,” medical terms referring to labored breathing and the involuntary spasms that occur after brain damage.

According to TMZ, the show’s crew can be heard “in a blind panic” on the 911 call, and that Goodwin was initially unresponsive after the fall — leaving some to believe that the daredevil was dead.

The outlet added that Goodwin was airlifted to a hospital and immediately went into surgery. He is reportedly being treated at a trauma unit, and his prognosis is not clear.

Representatives for America’s Got Talent: Extreme did not give details of the ill-fated stunt, but TMZ said that sources indicated Goodwin was suspended 70 feet in the air, by his feet, wearing a straitjacket. On either side of him, the source said, were two cars suspended by cables, swinging back and forth.

Goodwin’s terrifying task, said the source, was to free his arms from the straitjacket and his feet from the cable so he could safely land on the airbag below, without being crushed by the swinging cars.

According to TMZ‘s source, the cars smashed into one another, “sandwiching Goodwin between them,” before they exploded — “erupting in a gigantic fireball.”

The stuntman reportedly plummeted to the ground, missing the airbag and slamming his head on the floor of the set.

Jonathan Goodwin’s Life on the Edge

Goodwin, who has described himself as an “escape artist, daredevil, and risk taker,” has made a living performing death-defying stunts and feats of bravery.

The British stuntman said he has been “attacked by sharks, burned at the stake, buried alive, bitten by rattlesnakes, hung from buildings, helicopters, and cable cars” on his website, and has performed on six continents as a “expert escape artist, knife thrower, free climber, archer, side show performer, marksman, free diver, stunt artist, and strength performer.”

His planned appearance on America’s Got Talent: Extreme wouldn’t have been his first appearance in the AGT franchise, either. The daredevil performed an escape stunt in a 2020 episode of the television talent show.

The daredevil was covered in flammable liquid while he freed himself from handcuffs and a head cage, just barely escaping a fiery death.

Future Uncertain for AGT Spinoff

America’s Got Talent: Extreme, the show for which Jonathan Goodwin was rehearsing, is a planned spinoff of the flagship AGT series. The show was announced earlier this month and is intended to showcase more stunt-driven and spectacular acts than the original series.

“This new series will showcase the most outrageous, unique and jaw-dropping acts of enormous scale and magnitude that simply cannot be confined to a theater stage,” NBC said at the time.

A premiere date was not announced for the series, which will reportedly be hosted by actor Terry Crews.

There’s no indication yet that NBC executives are planning the show’s cancellation, but the terrible accident is sure to give some potential competitors second thoughts.
