Julia Garner, Florence Pugh, and other young celebs are fighting for a coveted role in a Madonna biopic directed and written by the music superstar. But landing the sought-after part isn’t going to be easy.

According to Julia Garner, Florence Pugh, and many other talented young actresses vying for the role, the selection process has been “grueling,” sending the hopeful women through a kind of “Madonna bootcamp.”

Casting director Carmen Cuba is leading the search, which also includes Euphoria‘s Alexa Demie, Mayor of Kingstown‘s Emma Laird, and musical acts such as Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira. The casting process has lasted months, according to The Hollywood Reporter, featuring 11-hour days full of readings, singing auditions, call backs, and long choreography sessions with Madonna.

“You have to be able to do everything,” an unnamed source told the entertainment news outlet, adding that Madonna’s heavy involvement with the film is both unusual for this type of film, but necessary to the pop idol to tell her story right.

“The reason I’m doing it is because a bunch of people have tried to write movies about me, but they’re always men,” Madonna told Jimmy Fallon back in October.

Juno writer Diablo Cody was set to pen the screenplay alongside producers Brett Ratner and Michael De Luca, but all three have since left the project. Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl on the Train) has been hired to co-write with Madonna, and Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: Homecoming) will produce.

The competition is intense, according to The Hollywood Reporter, but for actresses like Florence Pugh, Julia Garner, and Alexa Demie the role could be propel them to even greater stardom.

Star of Netflix’s Ozark for four seasons, Julia Garner has been having a huge moment in Hollywood the last few years. Now starring in Inventing Anna, a biopic miniseries about the Instagram-famous con woman who tricked New York’s elite into thinking she was a wealthy heiress, the talented actress has turned even more heads, especially for her accent work.

Florence Pugh, a fan favorite who recently joined Marvel’s superhero universe as the Black Widow, is also high in the running for the role of Madonna. In fact, she’s one of the busiest young actresses in Hollywood today. Previously gaining fame in films such as Midsommar and Little Women, Florence will soon appear in the Olivia Wilde-directed psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling in September, and The Wonder, based on the popular Emma Donoghue novel.

According to Newsweek‘s Samuel Spencer, “Pugh is the only one of the actors mentioned by reports on the biopic who has the gravitas to pull the role off,” adding that she “is the only Oscar nominee among the group of likely candidates.”

Alexa Demie, who has gained attention for her role in the HBO teen drama Euphoria, has also thrown her hat in the ring. However, many critics believe that casting director Carmen Cuba will likely choose a film star over TV actresses like Julia Garner, Alexa Demie, or Emma Laird.

With the role’s demanding choreography and singing scenes, professional performers like Sky Ferreira or Bebe Rexha are also being considered. Sky has appeared in Twin Peaks: The Return, American Woman, and an episode of Jordan Peele’s The Twilight Zone reboot.

The biopic, set to culminate with Madonna’s 1990 “Blond Ambition” tour, is still in the pre-production phase, but the casting choice will likely be announced soon.
