Lala Kent hates the phrase “California sober,” and she had no problem going off on James Kennedy’s fiancée Raquel Leviss after she used the words.

On Tuesday Lala appeared on Watch What Happens Live on Bravo. Andy Cohen asked her what she thought about Raquel saying James is “California sober.” The phrase, which has been used by Demi Lovato, means using some substances in moderation, instead of giving them up entirely. But the traditional definition of sobriety means not using any substances at all.

Lala Kent has been sober for a few years, and she doesn’t believe that moderation can be equated with sobriety. “It’s not a real thing. [It’s] not a real thing,” she told Andy.

“The term is dry, and I’m obviously in the program. I’m with a lot of incredible men and women who do everything in their power to never pick up any sort of substance,” she said. “So to hear someone say, ‘I’m California sober,’ it doesn’t sit right with me. Because I’m a person who only drank and smoked weed and almost lost my entire life. So I don’t like it.”

The term recently became popular because of singer Demi Lovato. Demi went on CBS Sunday Morning and said that they identify as California sober when it comes to their addiction recovery. The singer has had a long battle with opioids and almost died from an overdose back in 2018.

While on TV Demi said, “I think the term that I best identify with is ‘California sober.’ I really don’t feel comfortable explaining the parameters of my recovery to people, because I don’t want anyone to look at my parameters of safety and think that’s what works for them, because it might not.” they continued, “I am cautious to say that, just like I feel the complete abstinent method isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for everybody, I don’t think that this journey of moderation is a one-size-fits-all solution for everybody.”

According to the singer, they use marijuana and sometimes alcohol in place of their previous addiction to opioids.

“You know, there are people out there who work their a– off to never take themselves out of reality and to never place themselves in an altered state,” Lala said on the Behind The Velvet Rope podcast at the time. “They don’t even, when they have a cold, take DayQuil or NyQuil. So to say that you’re like, ‘California sober’ or this type of sober is extremely offensive, I think.”

Lala Kent has been sober since 2018 and called her decision to stay clean “life changing.” She said that her drinking got really bad after her father’s death in April 2018. A year later, Lala decided to get sober and celebrated one year with a heartfelt message to fans.

She said, “It’s been awhile since I’ve posted about sobriety,” she began. “It’s important for me to say that this is a disease that can only be self diagnosed. No one got me sober. … I got me sober. I made the choice to work hard every day to not pick up a drink.”

The reality TV star continued and said, “I see addiction in front of me often — but it isn’t my job to speak on it, nor is it my job to judge,” she added. “It’s my job to pray for them and take a moment of silence for the alcoholic who still suffers. And when someone comes to me asking for help, I offer my ear & knowledge, and point them in the direction that was pointed to me. #1year9months2days.”

Though Demi is OK with the California sober method, the singer knows it doesn’t work for everyone. Demi said: “I’ve learned that shutting a door on things makes me want to open the door even more. I’ve learned that it doesn’t work for me to say ‘I’m never gonna do this again.”
