N.J. firefighter Luis Morales-Sarmiento, 33, and his wife, Katherine Morales-Sarmiento, 22, have been charged with sexually assaulting a teenage boy. The couple was arrested and taken to the Beverly City Police Department Monday. The couple has now been charged with second-degree sexual assault and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child.
The Beverly City Police started an investigation into the alleged sexual assault after the mother of the teenage boy reported the crime. According to her, the assault happened last month at the couple’s home at the 500 block of Wheatley Avenue.
It was Katherine Morales-Sarmiento who surrendered first on Monday after the teen’s mother brought the incident to light. A police investigation revealed that her husband, Luis Morales-Sarmiento, was also involved in the assault. It has not been revealed why so much time had passed between the assault last month and the police report.
The Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office and the Beverly City Police will now be running a joint investigation to gather more information about the alleged sexual assault and the events that led up to it. The main investigators in the case include BCPO Detective Siobhan McClintock and BCPD Patrol Officer Mason Perkins.
It is unclear how the couple and the victim were connected and why the assault took place to begin with. The name of the victim has not been released for his privacy. The investigation is still in its early stages and many things have yet to be learned about this tragic event.
Luis Morales-Sarmiento, who is a volunteer firefighter for Beverly City, allegedly become acquainted with the boy and invited him back to his home. The teenager was later assaulted in the couple’s bedroom.
The husband and wife were picked up by police on Monday and were later released the following Tuesday after appearing in Superior Court in Mount Holly. It is unclear whether the couple has hired attorneys to represent them. They are being prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor LaChia Bradshaw. They are next scheduled to appear in front of a grand jury for indictment.
The couple hasn’t made any comments to the media about their arrest and charges. People tried to reach out to the Beverly City Fire Department where Luis volunteered and has received no response.
Police are unsure whether this is the couple’s first incident of sexual assault and whether the teenage boy is their first and only victim. Until the public learns more of this case’s facts the couple’s guilt is still up for debate.
Investigators asked anyone else who may have been victimized by the couple to contact Burlington County prosecutors at (609) 265-5035.
