How much more can MacKenzie Scott and Melinda Gates have in common? Now that Melinda has officially announced her separation from Bill, the co-founder of Microsoft, people expect that she will join MacKenzie Scott, Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife, on the list of wealthiest women in the world. We’ve taken a look at the two women, and it turns out they have a lot more in common than breaking up with their billionaire husbands!
They’re Both Published Authors
MacKenzie Scott has been an aspiring novelist for her entire life, losing her first-ever story, “The Book Worm,” to a flood at 6. Scott studied under Toni Morrison while at Princeton, and the Nobel Prize winner calls Scott “one of the best students I’ve ever had in my creative writing classes.” Since earning her degree, Scott has published two bestsellers, “The Testing of Luther Albright” and “Traps.” Melinda Gates is also known for her writing skills, and her first published book, “The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World,“ came out in 2019.
They Both Have A Passion For Philanthropy
While MacKenzie Scott may not have a foundation with her ex-husband, she has become famous for her charity. Since her divorce from Jeff Bezos, Scott has become the richest woman in the world with a net worth of $59 billion. She has revealed some of her recent charitable commitments to be over $1.7 billion and has signed the Giving Pledge, a commitment among the wealthy to give away a significant portion of their fortunes over their lifetimes. MacKenzie has made this promise independently from Jeff Bezos, who remains the wealthiest person alive.
Melinda Gates launched her own philanthropic endeavor with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000. The foundation uses donations to “tackle the greatest inequalities in our world.” As of today, the foundation is worth $51 billion in assets, but Melinda and Bill have promised to continue their professional relationship at the organization. Melinda has been known to donate her assets throughout the past three decades and even co-founded the very same Giving Pledge that MacKenzie subscribes to.
They Have Teamed Up To Empower Women
In 2020, Melinda Gates connected with MacKenzie Scott to launch the Equality Can’t Wait Challenge. This project is awarding $40 million to organizations around the world that make an effort to empower women by 2030. Their shared goals are to increase female influence in politics, economic opportunity, and everyday life. Both philanthropists have experienced motherhood in America and they’re determined to make the workplace more flexible for caregivers.
