Marjorie Taylor Greene, a U.S. representative from Georgia, is under fire for her repeated confrontations with New York representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Greene chased AOC outside the House chamber Wednesday afternoon, calling her name twice to get her attention.
“Hey, Alexandria” Greene screamed through the House chamber as AOC left. The Georgia Congresswoman is known for her far-right ideologies, often backing conspiracy theories among fellow Republicans.
As Marjorie Taylor Greene chased Ocasio-Cortez, Greene asked why AOC supports Antifa, a far-left extremist group. She also labeled Black Lives Matter a terrorist group, a phrase she is currently paying for across social media.
When AOC neglected to counter Greene’s claims or stop to face her, the Georgia rep screamed, saying she was failing to defend her social ideals, which Greene deems “radical.” Greene was looking for a public debate, and she repeatedly asked AOC why she wasn’t discussing important political matters.
The only time Ocasio-Cortez stopped to acknowledge the far-right rep was when she turned around and threw her hands in the air. After the confrontation, Marjorie Taylor Greene called AOC “a chicken.” The Republican claimed “she doesn’t want to debate. I don’t think the debate has been agreed to yet.”
Greene took to Twitter Wednesday to call out AOC over the incident, tweeting that she “just talked to @AOC again. You chickened out bc you are too scared to debate me about your Socialist Green New Deal. You are also a hate-America terrorist sympathizer. #JihadSquad Members of Congress do NOT support terrorism & shouldn’t be afraid to debate their legislation.”
Greene received serious backlash after the encounter. This is far from the first time Greene has attacked someone, though. In February, Marjorie Taylor Green posted an anti-transgender sign outside of her office, in an attempt to hurt Illinois Rep. Marie Newman.
Newman has a transgender daughter and Greene was responding to the transgender flag the Illinois Rep. posted outside her office. “There are TWO genders: MALE & FEMALE” the sign read. “Trust the science.” After posting the sign, Greene can be seen slapping her hands together as if it were a job well done.
Greene also has a long history with AOC, including consistent harassment of the New York Congresswoman. A video recently surfaced that shows Marjorie Greene and a few of her companions inside the U.S. Capitol on February 22, 2019. The individuals were livestreaming video of their visit, and when they got to AOC’s office door, they loudly demeaned Cortez and her beliefs.
“We’re going to go see, we’re going to visit, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Crazy eyes. Crazy eyes. Nutty. Cortez,” Greene says in the video before knocking on AOC’s office door. When Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t answer, Greene and her companions begin laughing and shouting into the mail slot.
“Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, I’m an American citizen. I pay your salary through the taxes that you collect for me through the IRS because I’m a taxpaying citizen of the United States,” Greene says. Her friends then begin posting offensive post-it notes on the wall to the right of the door. They also signed the visitor’s book with phrases like “Socialism sucks,” “Trump is you president,” and “you’re a traitor.”
The video was since deleted from Marjorie Taylor Greene’s social accounts but was saved by CNN’s KFile. It has resurfaced in light of the recent confrontation between Greene and AOC.
Many are calling for the ethics committee to review the video from 2019 and audio recordings of Wednesday’s confrontation. There have been numerous pleas to oust the Georgia representative, who has seemingly degraded the political role she was elected into.
