While Matt Lauer struggles to find a buyer for his $44 million Hamptons home, the disgraced TV personality is drumming up some serious questions. Four years after he was ousted from NBC, fans want to know where he is today and whether he’ll ever work on television again.
Is Matt Lauer Finished?
Matt spent decades as a well-known TV News Anchor before the reputation-ruining allegations surfaced. The journalist hosted big-name shows such as The Today Show and Dateline on NBC. With a net worth of approximately $85 million, it’s obvious Matt Lauer was doing a lot of things right. But the beloved host did plenty wrong, which is why he was fired from his NBC gig and hasn’t gotten a high-profile job since.
In 2017, Matt was ousted from NBC after multiple sources claimed he was wildly inappropriate at work and sexually abused a woman while she was drunk. Despite the number of accounts, NBC took a while before it took action against Matt Lauer. According to reports, many of those affected by his behavior were shut down by the network. At the time, The Today Show was raking in nearly $500 million in revenue, so it’s clear why NBC wanted to keep the beloved host.
When things became too much to handle, Matt was kicked out and his career has since gone up in flames. The question still remains: Will he put out the fire?
He’s Looking For A Comeback
Matt Lauer is reportedly all-in when it comes to returning to TV. Despite his scandal at NBC, the TV host isn’t ready to give up his career. Matt was blacklisted from several of the obvious choices, such as NBC and its affiliated networks. However, it’s possible the journalist can look elsewhere.
In June, the disgraced Today host was spotted at an Islanders game, according to Page Six. Before the Islanders game, Matt Lauer went to dinner with his girlfriend, Shamin Abas, as well as a bunch of his close friends.
According to a source who saw the encounter, Matt was a big hit at the restaurant, and “people were excited to see him.” Matt was chatting it up with a waitress and one fan even asked when he would be back on the air. “Matt, my wife missing you,” the patron reportedly told him.
The source continued, saying that “he was welcomed with open arms,” by fans at the restaurant and the Islanders game. “He looked good – he seemed in good shape and in good spirits.”
The Islanders game wasn’t the first time he was spotted in public either. In May, Matt attended a private Jon Bon Jovi performance and fans went wild.
Does That Mean He’s Back In Business?
Will Matt Lauer ever work again? Yes, it’s almost certain. What isn’t certain is in what way the disgraced anchor will get to work. Though some fans seem to love him, big corporations will find it hard to put Matt back on TV. With his cloudy past, it would be a major risk for any network to hire him, let alone put him in the spotlight.
In the wake of the Me Too Movement, companies have become more responsive to the world of social media and cancel culture. When allegations surface, it’s too risky for large corporations to ignore the problem.
It isn’t all bad news for Matt, though. It’s evident that the former Today show host still has quite a following. He also has a lot of experience in the business – experience that could be profitable if used wisely. It’s possible that a network or streaming service will hire Matt Lauer as a producer who is very much behind the scenes.
What His Life is Like Now
After the allegations against Matt surfaced, he has faced many goodbyes. NBC ousted him and Hollywood essentially blacklisted him – at least for the time being.
In September of 2019, Matt Lauer and his wife, Annette Roque, finalized their divorce. Fans saw the split coming from miles away, though Matt was vocal about his reluctance to leave the marriage behind. Before it was finalized, a source told People that Matt was “fighting to save the marriage” and that “he doesn’t want a divorce.”
Despite his efforts, Matt was forced to end his marriage and career in a short period of time. Still the disgraced anchor has some things going for him. A few months after his divorce, Matt started seeing his longtime friend Shamin Abas. Shamin is a public relations executive and the president of Shamin Abas Ultra-Luxury Brand Marketing & Business Development. The couple has been together since 2019.
