Matthew Perry appeared dazed during his Good Morning America interview alongside Friends cast members on Tuesday morning. Recent appearances have shown Matthew with a slow, halted speech that has left fans wondering what’s going on.
Answering questions like their favorite Friends episode and whether they’ve ever watched reruns, the cast of Friends was energetic, talkative, and certainly happy to be back on set. With the HBO Max reunion special around the corner, fans are excited to see what lies in store. The increased press surrounding the show has put Matthew Perry front and center, and his behavior is creating a lot of buzz. But not in a good way.
During the interview, Matthew can be seen staring off into the distance, seemingly unaware of the topic at hand. His facial expressions are dulled and his daze is extremely noticeable. When he does speak, his words are let out slow and cautiously, as if he is struggling to put them together.
“I knew it was going to be a seriously emotional experience and it has been,” Matthew Perry explained during his interview. Sitting next to the lively David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc, Matthew seems drab in comparison. He barely has things to say, but when he does, his speech is dragged out.
When asked about the cast’s favorite Friends episode, Matthew says his was “the one where everyone finds out” in which Chandler’s relationship with Monica is outed by Phoebe. It’s easy to connect the dots and see why Matthew Perry would want to step into the shoes of the young Chandler Bing. Who didn’t love his boyish charm?
Throughout his career, Matthew Perry has had ups and downs, but fans often remember his iconic sarcasm and witty charm in characters like Chandler Bing, Mike O’Donnell in 17 Again, and Oscar Madison in The Odd Couple. However, despite his rapid success after Friends, Matthew Perry has struggled with addiction and various health problems.
A Vicodin addiction after a jet ski accident and several stints in rehab for drug and alcohol abuse made the last 20 years challenging. Matthew has dedicated much of his life to giving back to others, such as setting up Perry House, a free facility for drug and alcohol addicts. But he has fallen off the wagon several times. Now fans are worried there may be an issue again.
At the end of the interview, which aired on Good Morning America, Matthew Perry was pressing his hands to his cheeks and slouching, as though he were bored or forgot why he was there at all. While David Schwimmer was explaining how excited he was for fans to watch the reunion special, Matthew seemed like he’d prefer to be anywhere but there.
What this means for his part in the reunion special is unknown. But fans can see it all unfold on HBO Max on May 27.
