Mel Thompson, a popular social media influencer and makeup guru, passed away, according to her husband, Puffin Thompson. The 35-year-old YouTube star was known for her high-energy makeup tutorials and product review videos. As of Tuesday morning, her cause of death is still unknown.
It’s not clear what happened to the Instagram model, though her husband announced that she died over the weekend. He didn’t reveal the cause, but he shared photos and thoughts.
“Mel sadly passed away yesterday,” he wrote in the caption alongside a carousel of gorgeous pictures of his gorgeous wife. “It’s really hard to just choose 10 photos. We lost a beautiful person. I just wanted to show the smiles she brought.”
According to the influencer’s husband, he has “had to answer so many texts of people just checking in on her without even knowing of her passing. It’s great to see how loved she was. And she loved all you right back.”
Mel Thompson was popular on both YouTube and Instagram for her makeup tutorials. She garnered an impressive 58.6k followers on Instagram by posting pictures of herself and various makeup palettes. On YouTube, the star earned over 170,000 subscribers and had a successful network of fellow content creators on the platform.
“I’ll continue to love her and miss her forever,” her mourning husband wrote on Instagram. “She was such a pillar for our family. The kids would talk to her nonstop and she was constantly talking with them and trying to help them with their stuff.”
While the cause of death is still unknown, the Instagram post did reference Mel Thompson’s ongoing health issues. Puffin Thompson admitted that “no matter how bad she felt, she would still rub my back when I came and jumped on the bed next to her while she was working tirelessly to put out content.”
A commenter who claimed to be close to the YouTube star explained that had been struggling with many health issues. The Instagram user, who goes by Elizabeth Spencer, said in the comments sections below the tribute post that Mel Thompson “had a lot of medical problems.”
“I actually was the one who told her I thought she had Ehlers-Danlos,” Spencer continued. “She went to her [doctor] and she was diagnosed with it. She talked about it on her channel. I’m not sure if that was a factor. I’m devastated.”
Puffin Thompson did not confirm whether his wife had Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or if it was a factor in her death. The illness can have a massive effect on a person’s life, even at a young age.
According to Mayo-Clinic, “Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a group of inherited disorders that affect your connective tissues — primarily your skin, joints, and blood vessel walls. Connective tissue is a complex mixture of proteins and other substances that provide strength and elasticity to the underlying structures in your body.”
Those who suffer from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome usually have “overly flexible joints and stretchy, fragile skin.” In some more severe forms of the disorder, those affected may experience ruptures in the walls of their blood vessels, intestines, or uterus. In most cases, the severity and symptoms of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome vary from person to person.
“Everybody knows how talented she was as an artist and with her helpful knowledge, but those closest to her know how truly wonderful she was,” Mel Thompson’s husband concluded his beautiful post. “She would have done anything to help anyone without a second thought. I wish I had her back.”
After the news broke that the YouTube star had died, fans across both her social media platforms wrote comments in support of the influencer and her family. Even other content creators joined in, writing beautiful messages in the comment section of Puffin Thompson’s message, as well as Mel Thompson’s last YouTube video.
“So so so sorry,” acclaimed makeup artist Wayne Goss wrote on the latest Instagram post. Mel Thompson had just released a YouTube video in which she tested several of Goss’ products.
Lisa Eldridge, another famous makeup artist, said that she was ” so deeply saddened and shocked,” by the news. “My thoughts are with friends and family…. truly heartbreaking. Rest in peace Mel, thank you for always being so wonderful.”
Hindash, a Dubai-based cosmetics company with 1.2 million followers wrote under the tribute announcement that “I’m so sorry for your loss. Heartbreaking news.”
