Melanie Ham, a popular Arts & Crafts Youtuber with over 810,000 subscribers, died on Tuesday according to her husband, Robert, who penned a heartbreaking tribute to his wife on Instagram.

Suffering from a rare form of cancer that affects the muscle and bone, the YouTube personality passed away at the age of 36. Discussing knitting, crocheting, and quilt-making through weekly uploaded videos, Melanie Ham also spoke about her cancer diagnosis before the fight became too much.

“It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness I share the news of the passing of my sweet, amazing, beautiful wife Melanie,” her husband, Robert Ham, wrote on her Instagram page. “My family, our doctors, our nurses and especially Melanie fought until the end and did all we could do to avoid today, but that is not our path.”

He added that the couple was just nine days short of their 16th wedding anniversary, and that she “fought like a warrior queen” up until the very end.

“If you’ve been following our journey I’m sure you were, like us, hopeful she could defeat this insidious disease,” he wrote. “Over the past few months things have been progressively getting worse and we’re thankful that we made it to this point through the holidays and tried to make every moment count.”

Melanie Ham stopped releasing videos on YouTube in April 2021, presumably due to her worsening condition. She had not updated fans on her Instagram page since July.

“Despite the deep grief my family and I feel today we want to celebrate an amazing woman and a life well-lived,” her husband continued. “She loved passionately, created beautifully, provided abundantly and was my best friend all the way to the end.”

He thanked viewers for their messages and prayers as his wife fought her cancer, and shared photos of her final days in the hospital. Melanie Ham is also survived by her parents Don and Lisa, and her two children, a son and a daughter.

“Hug those you love today,” Robert Ham concluded his tribute on Instagram, “and say a prayer for my beautiful, strong children.”

Starting her YouTube channel in 2011, Melanie Ham’s crafting videos grew to garner over 71 million total views, with most videos averaging 25,000 views each.

Some of her most popular videos, which ran just five to 15 minutes each, taught users how to make loom knitting hats, log cabin quilts, tote bags, jewelry organizers, DIY face masks, kitchen aprons, pillow covers, and more. She also taught color theory and offered tips on where to find the best products, tools, yarn, and fabric for craft making.

“Only 5 weeks after surgery I had new symptoms and after a scan we discovered that the cancer spread and had become very aggressive,” she updated fans this past October.

She began chemo and stopped posting entirely after, writing: “my health has been a quite a struggle the past several months.”

Leading up to her passing, her final two videos reached over 800,000 views as fans continually checked in to see if there were any updates on her health.

“Anyone who followed her YouTube channel will miss her so much,” one fan wrote on Instagram. “But, she will live on forever in the people she inspired. Your entire family will forever be in my thoughts and prayers.”

“Such a loss,” another fan commented. “Melanie was a beautiful soul and an amazing teacher. May her memory be a blessing. I know a piece of her will go into every quilt I make.”

A “Celebration of Life” service is planned for Melanie on Saturday, Jan. 29, at Crossroads Community Church, Valencia, CA, at 11 a.m. A livestream link was shared for her fans around the world, as well as a note that read, “Colorful attire encouraged.”
