Former reality TV star Renee Graziano was arrested Tuesday night after she was involved in a DUI in Staten Island. She was charged with one count of operating a motor vehicle while impaired. The NYPD is waiting to officially charge her after the results of her blood tests.
After the arrest, Renee Graziano took to Instagram and said that no drugs were involved with her accident. The reality TV star claimed that her car hit black ice before the crash. The NYPD has not confirmed her claims.
According to reports, the DUI happened Tuesday night around 10:35 p.m. Renee was driving a 2020 Nissan Murano near Arthur Kill Road and Arden Avenue in Arden Heights when she lost control of the vehicle and struck another car. Luckily for the former Mob Wives star, the black Jeep that she hit was unoccupied.
No one was injured during the crash. When police arrived, Renee Graziano was getting out of her vehicle, and she appeared to be under the influence of some substance. Police reported that she was incoherent, had watery eyes and her speech was slurred.
It is unclear what kind of substance Renee Graziano was under when she got behind the wheel of her car. She reportedly told police that she had taken an Adderall earlier in the day. She was taken to a local hospital for blood tests and then to a local police precinct to be charged.
According to the Office of the District Attorney of Richmond County, they have not filed any charges against Renee and the investigation into her DUI is still ongoing.
Renee Graziano previously opened up about her battles with substance abuse and depression in the past. In 2016, after VH1’s Mob Wives was canceled after six seasons, Renee entered rehab.
Her sister, Jennifer, said, “She is back in Florida. She is getting treatment that stems from her depression and some things that she has to work out. She’s been battling depression for a while and this kind of treatment kind of digs a little deeper than what she’s done in the past. So, I’m hoping she stays as long as she needs.”
In 2018, Renee opened up personally and told Radar Online that she battled with an addiction to prescription drugs, specifically Xanax. The 52-year-old said that she used drugs to help numb the pain that she was feeling.
“When I’ve gone to rehab, it’s been because I would get high to not feel, to suppress my feelings and get out of my own head,” she told Radar Online in 2018. “It has never been about partying; it’s been more about trying not to feel all of the physical and emotional pain from the abuse I’ve suffered.”
She also revealed to the magazine that she OD’ed on oxycontin in 2007 after she was prescribed the medicine for a surgery. According to the reality TV star, she has been in rehab four times for her addiction.
Despite her struggles with addiction and mental health, Renee Graziano has tried to use her social media platform to bring awareness to her struggle. She hopes it inspires others to look for help.
“We cannot deny that depression and addiction don’t come hand in hand all over the world — and if me being a celebrity could stand up and show somebody a difference — maybe get two or three kids to try it — if we all put our heads together, it’s a blessing,” she shared with In Touch. “I don’t feel that I was cursed with the disease of addiction. I felt it was a blessing.”
Renee Graziano became famous in 2011 after the first season of Mob Wives aired on VH1. The series followed the lives of Staten Island women who were connected to famous mob families. The series was produced by Renee’s sister, Jennifer. The two sisters are related to Anthony Graziano, who was a consigliere for the Bonanno family.
Anthony Graziano passed away in 2019.
Hector Pagan Jr., Renee Graziano’s ex-husband, was also a member of the Bonanno family before turning into an informant for the FBI in 2014 to reduce his prison sentence. The couple is now divorced.
