Molly Hurwitz and Friends star Matthew Perry have split after a half-year engagement. Though neither Molly nor Matthew have explained why the two of them parted way, fans are wondering what happened.
According to People, Matthew Perry decided to call off his engagement to Molly Hurwitz shortly after the Friends: The Reunion aired on HBO Max. The 29-year-old literary manager has not made a public statement about her split from the high-profile celebrity, though Matthew recently explained that “sometimes things just don’t work out and this is one of them.”
The 51-year-old actor said, “I wish Molly the best,” and it’s unclear to virtually everyone why he would leave her behind. The couple got together in 2018 and dated until Matthew popped the question in November 2020.
At the time, Matthew said that “I decided to get engaged,” and “luckily, I happened to be dating the greatest woman on the face of the planet.” Many believed the two would make it for the long haul, especially since Matthew’s career has finally settled down. After a 9-season-long bout on Friends and the recent Friends Reunion, and plenty of movies and TV shows in between, it seemed the actor was ready to settle down. Now, it doesn’t look that way.
Matthew is known for his rocky love life, after splitting with Mean Girls actress Lizzy Caplan in 2012 and Baywatch’s Yasmine Bleeth after that. The announcement that he was calling it quits once again isn’t exactly a shock – especially after his alarming behavior in an interview recently.
Many believe Matthew has fallen off the wagon again, especially after he slurred his speech during a press interview leading up to Friends: The Reunion. Social media went wild, speculating that he had done serious damage to himself this time around, after years of reportedly staying sober and working through his addiction.
Others, like Friends: The Reunion director, Ben Winston, are convinced Matthew is totally healthy, and that fans have nothing to worry about. “He was great,” Winston told The Hollywood Reporter. “People can sometimes just be unkind. I wish they weren’t. I loved working with him. He’s a brilliantly funny man and I thought he had some great one-liners in the show.”
Still, Matthew Perry has a troubled history. Matthew was left addicted to Vicodin after a jet ski accident and turned to both drugs and alcohol several times throughout his career. He admitted in 2016 that he doesn’t remember filming three seasons of Friends, because of a drinking problem he had developed.
There is no confirmation whether Matthew Perry decided to leave Molly Hurwitz because of his long-term issues. But fans are becoming increasingly concerned about the actor who played Chandler.
