Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. Transportation Secretary, spent Halloween in the hospital after his 2-month-old son got sick. Buttigieg’s husband posted to Instagram and updated their family on little Gus’ condition.
He said, “Happy Halloween from these #twinfrastructure safety advocates! As you can see, we’re spending this Halloween in the hospital,” Chasten Buttigieg said. “Gus has been having a rough go of it but we’re headed in the right direction. We’re so thankful for all of the love and support shown to our family these last few months. And also, for the dedicated and kind medical professionals who have helped take care of our two little pumpkins as they’ve grown stronger, healthier, and cuter.”
In the Instagram photos it appears that baby Gus is hooked up to some sort of hospital equipment. It is unclear what illness the infant is suffering from, or how severe his condition is.
Friends and family were quick to respond with their support and well wishes for the baby. Pete Buttigieg responded to his husband’s post with a jack-o-lantern emoji while actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley wrote, “So sorry about the hospital but happy Gus is getting great care!”
Even complete strangers took to Instagram to show their support and comment on the cute costume that Gus was wearing. One user shared her experience with having a young child in the hospital and said, “Sending love and strength. These pictures are adorable and Instagram-friendly, but having a baby in the hospital is serious wear and tear. Hang in there!”
And another user gushed about the funny costumes and said, “Repping the infrastructure like the son of the Secretary!!! Love it!! Happy Halloween you guys!!”
Photos shared to Instagram show the little 2-month-old dressed up like a traffic cone. According to Buttigieg, the Halloween costumes for their twins were Chasten’s idea. The couple has two children, Joseph “Gus” August and Penelope Rose.
During his appearance on CNN‘s Sunday State of the Union, the transportation secretary spilled about the adorable costumes. He said, “So yeah, my husband Chasten found these … it’s a little hard to describe, but basically they’re, like, these traffic cones. They’re infrastructure. Basically they’re going to be going as infrastructure.”
The costumes are a nod to an infrastructure bill that Pete Buttigieg has been trying to pass. The bill would help support the country’s supply chain which has been struggling since the start of the pandemic. According to the transportation secretary, the bill is close to getting passed.
Pete and Chasten Buttigieg welcomed twins in August and have been very open about starting their family. Buttigieg posted on Twitter to announced that they had finally made their dream a reality.
Back in August he wrote, “For some time, Chasten and I have wanted to grow our family,” Buttigieg said. “We’re overjoyed to share that we’ve become parents! The process isn’t done yet and we’re thankful for the love, support, and respect for our privacy that has been offered to us. We can’t wait to share more soon.”
Since welcoming the twins, Buttigieg has been gushing about what it means to be a new father. During an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe he said, “I used to think of 5 a.m. as early. Now I think of it as nap time if I’m lucky. And yet, I catch myself grinning half the time. … We’re just over the moon.”
Recently, the transportation secretary got some backlash for going on paternity leave. FOX News host, Tucker Carlson, criticized the lawmaker for taking some time to help his husband care for their new children. He said, “Pete Buttigieg has been on leave from his job since August after adopting a child. Paternity leave, they call it, trying to figure out how to breastfeed. No word on how that went.”
Buttigieg responded to Carlson’s comments and told The View that he is not going to apologize for taking care of his children. He said that paternity leave is hard work, not a vacation. He also informed Carlson that the couple is bottle feeding their twins.
