Pete Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten Buttigieg, just announced that they have become parents. The current U.S. Secretary of Transportation took to Twitter to make the amazing announcement.
“For some time, Chasten and I have wanted to grow our family,” the former Indiana mayor wrote. “We’re overjoyed to share that we’ve become parents!”
Pete Buttigieg did not confirm whether he and Chasten used adoption to fulfill their parental dreams or if they are expecting a child through surrogacy. Mayor Pete seemed thoroughly overjoyed by his announcement but made sure to caution his followers regarding his family’s privacy.
“The process isn’t done yet and we’re thankful for the love, support, and respect for our privacy that has been offered to us,” he wrote. “We can’t wait to share more soon.”
While it’s certainly exciting that the political leader is becoming a parent, many of his followers are curious how he and his husband have become parents. The announcement didn’t include whether the couple adopted or used a surrogate, though the announcement did leave some hints.
Many on Twitter have speculated that Pete Buttigieg adopted a child but that “the process isn’t” complete. Mayor Pete used very logistical terminology, which led many to believe that he was not talking about pregnancy. Instead, many think the new dads are waiting on the formalities of adoption to be completed, but that they have gained confirmation.
Pete Buttigieg and his husband have been trying to start a family for a while. After the former Indiana mayor withdrew from the Presidential race, he and his husband have told reporters that they were excited to become fathers in the near future.
In an interview last September, the couple, who married in June 2018, told People that they were looking forward to having kids, no matter what that entailed.
“We’re just navigating those conversations,” Chasten Buttigieg admitted during the interview. “I’m so glad that we get this time … And it’s allowed us to have conversations, those necessary conversations, and now it’s really overwhelming figuring out how and where and when, and how much — my God.”
He continued, explaining that he and his husband were lucky because “we have a lot of friends who’ve had families in very different ways. So we’ve just been having great conversations with our friends about how they figured it out, and we’ll go from there. We’re just really excited and overwhelmed, I think.”
Pete Buttigieg said that they “were excited,” and that “it’s one thing when you’re in the middle of a campaign and there’s just no room for anything else. Not that there’ll ever be an easy or simple time. I don’t think there is for anybody, but it’s time to take those steps.”
It seems now is the right time for the new fathers to settle down and raise children. Though Mayor Pete did not secure the Democratic nomination for the 2020 election, he did earn a place as the leader of the U.S. Department of Transportation becoming the first openly gay cabinet secretary in the country’s history.
Pete Buttigieg has left other hints as to his family’s next steps. In a separate interview back in February 2020, while still on the campaign trail, Pete Buttigieg admitted that “no matter what happens, I think the next chapter in our personal lives is going to be about kids.”
He told the reporter that he was “really excited” about fatherhood and that “Chasten is just especially wired to be a great parent.” He added that “we would hope to do [it] soon. One way or the other.”
The tale of Pete Buttigieg and his husband is inspirational not only for the LGBTQ+ community but for all people who have hopes and dreams for their future. In another interview a couple of months ago, Pete explained that “at 13, I was beginning to understand that I was different — no, not understand. I was beginning to perceive that I was different and did not understand. The understanding that I had to gather was the task of years and years.”
He continued, adding that “I guess, it would’ve been nice to hear, ‘There’s nothing wrong with you. Just hang in there.’ Thirteen-year-old Pete came out alright. I want to make sure 13-year-old ‘whoever you are out there’ knows to hang in there, that — not to say it will be easy — but there’s a lot of people rooting for you, including the president and people like me.”
Pete Buttigieg is the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., and avoided the public eye for years before he hit the campaign trail before the 2020 presidential election. He made headlines for being an LGBTQ candidate, making strides to normalize members of those communities in political positions. During his campaign, Mayor Pete highlighted his sexual identity and his marriage. He did so despite homophobic attacks – which he courageously fought against during his campaign.
