It has been two months since Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, gave the world a stunning show in their Oprah Winfrey interview. Now fans are curious whether the tell-all was only about making money.
Prince Harry and Oprah Winfrey are joining forces for a mental health television series, The Me You Can’t See, which will release on Apple TV+. The series will focus on the mental health challenges that celebrities and other icons have faced, shedding light on their journey and struggle. Despite all the good the show could do for those suffering from mental health disorders, it raises the question: Was the bombshell interview just a launching pad for Harry and Meghan’s Hollywood careers?
The Oprah interview ripped the rug underneath the royal family after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealed the difficulties of living under a tight rule. From racism allegations to exposing Meghan’s mental health struggles, the interview unveiled a lot of issues previously hidden within Buckingham Palace.
While many fans were supportive of Meghan Markle’s revelations, the latest announcement casts a dark shadow. It’s starting to seem like Meghan is trying to make Harry into a celebrity.
Prince Harry left the royal family last January, parting ways with his cushy life in the spotlight. He lost financial ties and became independent, even turning to Tyler Perry for help before getting back on his feet. Being cut off from a billion-dollar estate is likely challenging, but it seems Prince Harry is not doing as poorly as previously thought.
From opening his own company, Archewell Productions, with Meghan Markle, to various high-profile deals with Netflix and Spotify, it seems the ex-royal is getting back on his feet quickly. Though he has had to adjust to being cut off, his bank account isn’t suffering. Prince Harry also signed a deal with Harry Walker Agency, which will represent Harry for speaking engagements in which he could earn $1 million per speech. He is expected to chat about mental health and grieving.
Now Prince Harry is set to executive produce The Me You Can’t See. It is clear that Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview was laying the groundwork for this upcoming project, which will tackle many of the same issues discussed on March 7.
However, with other huge names backing The Me You Can’t See, it may not have needed the publicity. Supporters say it’s likely that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took the stage to open the conversation regarding mental health in an attempt to normalize the topic before the show airs.
The Me You Can’t See is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on May 21, and will have big names and even bigger interviews. Lady Gaga, Glenn Close, and DeMar DeRozan will be taking to the screen to open up about their individual struggles.
“Now more than ever, there is an immediate need to replace the shame surrounding mental health with wisdom, compassion, and honesty,” Winfrey said regarding the show. “Our series aims to spark that global conversation.”
Prince Harry also discussed his view on his project. “We are born into different lives,” he explained, “brought up in different environments, and as a result are exposed to different experiences. But our shared experience is that we are all human.”
“The majority of us carry some form of unresolved trauma, loss, or grief,” The Duke of Sussex continued, “which feels–and is–very personal. Yet the last year has shown us that we are all in this together, and my hope is that this series will show there is power in vulnerability, connection in empathy, and strength in honesty.”
