Rigby Middle School was shaken by a terrifying shooting Thursday. The identity of the male student responsible has not been released, and a motive has not yet been identified.
The small town about 95 miles southwest of Yellowstone National Park was rocked midday after a student opened fire on peers and a custodian. The three victims – two students and one custodian – were taken to the hospital, but are expected to make a full recovery. Their wounds were reportedly not life-threatening.
Police are investigating the motive of the Rigby Middle School shooting as students, teachers, and parents seek answers. Chad Martin, the Jefferson School District Superintendent spoke on the matter in a tweet Thursday. “We had the worst nightmare a school could encounter,” he explained. “We had a school shooting here at Rigby Middle School. What we know so far is the shooter has been apprehended. There is no further threat to the students.”
Students and teachers were evacuated to a nearby high school as shots were heard throughout the building. “I am praying for those affected by the horrific events in Rigby today,” Senator Mike Crapo posted afternoon Thursday. “I am grateful for the service of law enforcement, first responders, and teachers responding quickly to keep students safe.”
The small Idaho town is home to about 5,000 people and is located just north of Idaho Falls. The shooting is making waves on social media as the gun epidemic in the United States continues to rage on, reaching all corners of the country.
“This has to stop,” John Taylor said on Twitter, after releasing a text conversation from a student inside the building at the time of the shooting.
The news of the shooting emerged a week after a woman was fatally shot outside of Smyrna Middle School. The terrifying scene in the middle school parking lot startled students inside the building, as they feared for their lives.
There is a growing call for stricter gun control legislation, with President Joe Biden pleading with lawmakers to pass a bill. “I don’t want to become confrontational but we need more Senate Republicans to join with the overwhelming majority of their Democratic colleagues, and close loopholes and require background checks to purchase a gun,” Biden said.
Details from the Rigby Middle School shooting are still being investigated. Parents want to know how the middle-school student had access to a firearm and was able to harm innocent children. The shooting will likely spark another intense plea for gun control reform.
