Rozalba Maria Grime has been sentenced to 57 years in a Brazilian jail after she beat her pregnant friend to death and stole her unborn child. According to reports, she hit Flavia Godinho Mafra with a brick before cutting out her baby with a utility knife.
The 27-year-old was convicted of aggravated murder, attempted murder of a baby, concealment of a corpse, obstruction of justice, abduction of a minor and denying the rights of a newborn.
Her trial lasted over 15 hours and was held at the court in Tijucas in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The motive of her crimes is unclear. In a bizarre theory, some knowledgeable with the case believe Grime killed her pregnant friend so she didn’t have to admit that she faked her own pregnancy.
According to court records, the vicious crime took place on Aug. 27, 2020. Grime lured her friend to an abandoned pottery site in Canelinha, Brazil. She told Mafra that they were going to her baby shower.
Grime then murdered her and cut her baby out of her womb. She placed Flavia Godinho Mafra in an old kiln where the mom-to-be died from a hemorrhage. She was 37 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.
Grime then reportedly met up with her boyfriend and headed to the hospital where she claimed that she had just given birth. The Brazilian woman had been claiming for months that she was pregnant and would later tell the court that she figured out a way to display fake pregnancy and birth symptoms.
The Brazilian woman had posted photos of her “growing” belly on her Instagram, along with updates about her fake baby. She even did a maternity photo shoot with her boyfriend.
Nurses at the hospital didn’t believe her story and later called police. In the beginning of the investigation, officers thought that the boyfriend was in on the crime, but it was discovered that he knew nothing about the murder or the fake pregnancy. He was acquitted earlier this year.
Court records show that Grime planned the brutal murder of her best friend and studied how to remove a baby from a pregnant belly. In court, Prosecutor Alexandre Cart Muniz spoke about the jury’s decision and said that Grime was mentally able and fully aware of the actions that she took to complete her crime.
This is not the first time that a woman has been murdered and her baby was removed from her womb. A similar case happened back in 2004, and the suspect was executed Jan. 2021 for her crimes.
In 2004, Lisa Montgomery was charged with killing 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett and cutting the baby girl out of her womb. According to reports she had traveled from her home in Kansas, to Stinnett’s home in Missouri and had told the mother-to-be that she was interested in buying a dog from her.
Instead, Montgomery strangled Stinnett and then stole her baby. She took off with the baby girl and police began searching for her. It was discovered that Montgomery had a history of faking pregnancies and was trying to pass off the newborn baby as her own.
Montgomery became the first person executed by the federal government in 67 years.
