Meghan Markle’s sister Samantha Markle is suing the Duchess of Sussex for allegedly lying in her tell-all interview with Oprah nearly one year ago, where she and Prince Harry spoke about their poor relationship with the royal family.

Samantha Markle, 57, claims that Meghan, 40, made “false and malicious statements” about her family, and lied when she said that she was an only child. Samantha Markle is technically Meghan Markle’s half-sister, from her father’s first marriage. She also has a half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr.

Maintaining a close relationship with her mother, Doria Ragland, Meghan Markle has distanced herself from her father over the past few years due to statements he made about Prince Harry and the royal family to the press. She also stated in the Oprah interview that she couldn’t remember the last time she saw Samantha.

“We’ve got photographs over a lifespan of us together,” Samantha told Inside Edition. “So how can she not know me?”

“The defamatory implication is that Plaintiff had no relationship whatsoever with her sister Meghan, they were virtual strangers, and that Plaintiff has created a lucrative career selling false stories to tabloids and television programs when she knows nothing about Defendant’s childhood,” Samantha Markle’s lawsuit read.

She also claimed that Meghan was “bashing” their father to create a false narrative of her life that would make it appear she went from “rags-to-royalty.”

“Meghan falsely claimed that: (a) she essentially raised herself from virtual poverty; (b) she was forced from the age of 13 to work in a series of low-paying jobs to ‘make ends meet,’” the lawsuit continued.

Before marrying Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was known for her acting role in the TV show Suits, an American legal drama on the USA network. According to Newsweek, she worked at a local frozen yogurt shop and later as a waitress and babysitter during her youth.

She told CNN later on that she had trouble getting roles in Hollywood because she “wasn’t Black enough for the Black roles” and “wasn’t white enough for the white ones,” so she had to support herself through freelance jobs and bookbinding.

Samantha Markle also claimed that Meghan misled the public about why their father couldn’t attend the wedding. Samantha says he suffered two heart attacks weeks before the royal event.

“Mr. Markle suffered two heart attacks in the weeks before Defendant’s wedding in May 2018 due to stress associated with the Royal wedding, the constant hounding and harassment by paparazzi and other media, and upsetting text messages he received from Defendant and Prince Harry,” she wrote in the lawsuit.

“Mr. Markle’s cardiologist told him he was too sick to travel to England for the wedding,” the suit continued. “Mr. Markle did not refuse to attend the wedding but was instructed by his doctor not to attend the wedding.”

She also said that their father paid for Meghan’s tuition at Northwestern University, despite her insistence that she paid her own way through school.

Samantha Markle is asking for $75,000 in damages, according to Page Six, on top of the cost of attorney’s fees.

In a statement to TMZ, Meghan Markle’s attorney Michael Kump said that, “This baseless and absurd lawsuit is just a continuation of a pattern of disturbing behavior. We will give it the minimum attention necessary, which is all it deserves.”

Back in March 2021, Meghan revealed that Samantha only changed her surname to Markle after the now-Duchess started dating Prince Harry. Prince Harry’s wife added: “That says enough.”
