WARNING: Major Spoilers Ahead for And Just Like That… Read at Your Own Risk.
SATC fans took to Twitter in dismay at the shocking death of Big in the first episode of the Sex and City spinoff, And Just Like That… Fans are wondering why the writers killed off such a beloved character in the first episode and the Twitter reactions are heartbreaking.
The Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That… premiered on HBO Max this week and fans are able to watch the first two episodes now. Going forward, the show will drop one episode every week until the season finale.
The show follows the three leading ladies of SATC (minus Samantha) as they take on a modern-day New York in their 50s. Instead of talking about sex and dating, the women are now talking about going gray and raising kids.
While many SATC fans were excited about the spinoff, the first two episodes left them angry and disappointed. At the end of the first episode, John James Preston was working out on his Peloton bike while Carrie and the girls were at Charlotte’s daughter’s piano recital.
After Big got off the bike and got ready to take a shower, he grabbed his arm and collapsed to the floor. Carrie arrived home soon after, ran to Big’s side, and delivered the line: “and just like that… Big died.”
It was explained in the second episode – where Carrie focuses on the death of her true love and the funeral – that Big had a heart attack. Many fans recall the character’s history with heart problems.
To say fans were devastated by Big’s death is an understatement. Many took to Twitter, expressing anger over the show’s decision to kill off a main character. Numerous fans pointed out that Carrie didn’t even try to call 911.
One person said, “I’m sorry WHHHHAAATTTTT Mr Big just dies like that….IN THE FIRST F—ING EPISODE!!!!! I did not see that coming. Carrie could have called a f—ing ambulance WTF!!!!! I am so shocked right now.”
Other SATC fans said that Big deserved more than a death on a Peloton. One fan explained that they “are floored. Mr. Big dies at the end of the first episode!!! Are you f*cking kidding me with this? 17 years waiting to see how [their life would be] together and he died just like that? And Carry don’t call the ambulance? Seriously.”
Peloton has since responded to the shocking death. Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, a member of Peloton’s health and wellness team, released a statement explaining that Big’s death was not because of the bike. Instead, it was due to his “extravagant lifestyle.”
She said, “I’m sure ‘SATC’ fans, like me, are saddened by the news that Mr. Big dies of a heart attack. Mr. Big lived what many would call an extravagant lifestyle — including cocktails, cigars, and big steaks — and was at serious risk as he had a previous cardiac event in Season 6. These lifestyle choices and perhaps even his family history, which often is a significant factor, were the likely cause of his death. Riding his Peloton Bike may have even helped delay his cardiac event.”
Putting the strange advertisement for Peloton aside, many fans are still upset with other writing choices that And Just Like That… made.
Some fans were disappointed about the writers’ treatment of Kim Cattrall’s Samantha. Before the premiere of the spinoff, it was revealed that Kim would not be joining the cast because of bad blood between her and Sarah Jessica Parker.
In the show, the writers explained Samantha’s absence by saying she had a falling out with the girls and moved to London for work. Shots of Carrie’s phone revealed a string of unanswered texts. Die-hard SATC fans complained that the spinoff isn’t the same without Samantha and that the writers should have provided a better send-off to such an amazing character.
One person said, “Put more respect on Samantha Jones. She was the most understanding friend in that group and would never go ghost like that. Lazy-ass writers.”
While it is clear that Samantha won’t be coming back in person for the reboot, some are hoping that she will receive better treatment in the rest of the series. Maybe it’ll help ease the sting of Big’s disappointing death.
